A Good Custom
Children's sermon
The Giant Book Of Children's Sermons
Matthew To Revelation
Object: praying hands and bowed head
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you know what a custom is or what I mean by the word custom? (let them answer) A custom is something that you do at a particular time. You always do it no matter how many times it happens. Putting up the Christmas tree is a custom in most homes at Christmas time. Even when there are no children at home, many people still have a Christmas tree in their house. It may be large or small, but they have a tree.
Praying is a custom. I pray before every meal. I am sure that most of you pray before you eat, to thank God for the food and all of the good things he has done for you. You probably also pray before you fall asleep at night and when you get up in the morning. It is good to talk to God and to share all of your thoughts with him. It is a custom to pray. We even make it more of a custom when we fold our hands like this, and then bow our heads in this way. (demonstrate the posture of prayer) It is a custom, and a wonderful custom, and it has been done by people and families for thousands of years. If you don't do it, I hope you will begin today.
Jesus prayed. It was a custom of Jesus to pray, and he also had other customs which I would like to share with you. The one custom that the Bible tells us about this morning is the custom that Jesus had of going to church on the day of worship. The Bible tells us that it was his custom to go every week to worship God.
Isn't that wonderful? Jesus did the same thing that you and I do. He did not think that he was so good that he didn't have to go to church. As a matter of fact, Jesus loved to go to worship and be with all of his friends and family, and sing the Psalms, and read the scriptures. The story we hear today is that when he went back home to the church where he was raised, he also went to church with his neighbors, and read the scriptures, and preached to the people about who he was.
You don't have to preach, but I am sure that it is good when you take your turn in Sunday school and help to read from the Bible, and share your prayers with your friends. It is a good custom to pray, and also to attend church every Sunday in the same way that Jesus followed his custom and prayed and went to church.
I hope you remember the word "custom" and that you will make it a custom to come to church every Sunday.
