A Good Deed Is Like A Candle

Object:
A candle and a jar. A dime for each child in individual envelopes.
Purpose: To encourage children to do good things for other people.
Lesson: This is something that we see each week as we gather here and I am sure you know what it is. At the beginning of the worship service, we light the candles up front. (At home, candles on the table could be used.)
These candles stand for many things. For example, Jesus told us to let our light so shine before others that they may see the good things we do and then they will thank God for your goodness (Cf. Matthew 5:16).
There is an interesting thing about a candle that is burning. You must let the candle burn out in the open or it will go out. Let me show you what happens when you cover up the flame. (Cover it with the glass jar.)
To be a good person, you have to do good things. It is not good enough to just think about doing something nice for someone else. Others need to experience your goodness. It has to be done out in the open so that it can be experienced by the people around you.
Now, if you had a dime, can you think of something good you could do with it for others? ... (Wait for the children
to offer answers. If none are offered, share the following with them): Place it in the collection plate to help support your church; buy a package of gum and share it with a friend; put ten cents with it and buy a post card and send a note to a friend or to your grandparents.
This envelope contains a dime and I want you to take it and think about doing something nice for someone, and then do what you have thought about.
Possible Times To Use This Illustration In The Home:
• When a child seems too selfish.
• When your child has received some money as a present and all he or she can think about is what to buy for self.
• When your child has found some money.
Scriptural Background: ''A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold'' (Proverbs 22:1).
