Series VII, Cycle C
Object:
Second Lesson: Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:7-9
Theme: Approach ...
Call To Worship
On August 27, 1883, James Wallis, chief of police on Rodriguez Island, not far from Zanzibar, wrote: "Several times during the night (26-27) reports were heard coming from the eastward, like the distant roar of heavy guns. These reports continued at intervals of between three and four hours, until 3 p.m. on the 27th, and the last two were heard in the directions of Oyster Bay and Port Mathurie." What Wallis was hearing were the distant eruptions of the Volcano Krakatoa, 2,968 miles away. There is no recorded instance in human history of a sound being heard from further away.
Except, of course, the echoes of that hammer driving in the nails on a hill far away, on Golgotha.
Collect
We can do no other, Lord, except to watch and wait. May we, with the strength of the women who did not abandon you, watch and wait with you this time as well. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, we thirst for answers. We are parched, with cracked throats, as we think of your misery and the misery of others. We need you. Do not leave us now. Lord, we follow. Amen.
Hymns
When I Survey The Wondrous Cross
Ride On, Ride On In Majesty
Go To Dark Gethsemane
