Good Friday
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle A
First Lesson: Isaiah 52:13--53:12
Theme: Out Of Anguish
Call To Worship
Out of his anguish he shall see light, the writer of Isaiah tells us. Let us embrace these words on this sad day that marks the physical death of Jesus.
Collect
On Good Friday, we see only Good Friday. Give us the grace to remember the Easter light that will come as a result of the anguish of today. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We will never understand the "why" of human suffering, O God, only that it is. Draw us toward the truth that out of our distress we will also find a new sense of meaning in the light of Easter. Through Christ. Amen.
27A Hymns
"O Sacred Head, Now Wounded" Tune: PASSION CHORALE
"He Never Said A Mumbalin' Word" Tune: SUFFERER

Good Friday
Second Lesson: Hebrews 10:16-25
Theme: Hearts Sprinkled Clean
Call To Worship
Leader: Good Friday is about God's keeping of promises. Come, worship, and witness how on this day God puts God's laws into our hearts.
People: Let us approach God with a true heart in full assurance of faith.
Collect
Because of your actions this day, O God, we are free to go forward in our lives with hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and bodies washed with pure water. O Thou, keeper of promises, we honor and worship you. In Jesus' name. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Leader: God, hear the cries of your people.
People: Why must we kill you every year on Good Friday? Is our coming here once in a lifetime not enough? You said Jesus' death was once and for all. Why are we not better people? Why are we so human?
Leader: Forgive us, God, for being so slow to hear you in our hearts. Forgive us, God, for killing you not only on this day but each time we stifle another person with unkindness and each time we set ourselves apart from the new, living way you have opened for us. Through Jesus. Amen.
27A Hymns
"On A Hill Far Away" Tune: THE OLD RUGGED CROSS
"What Wondrous Love Is This" Tune: WONDROUS LOVE
"Were You There?" Tune: WERE YOU THERE
Good Friday
Gospel: John 18:1--19:42
Theme: I Am He
Call To Worship
For this Jesus was born, and for this Jesus came into the world: to testify to the truth. Jesus testified to the truth by his words and by his deeds. Ultimately, he proved the truth by offering his body.
Collect
To thank you for giving your life for us, O Christ, we offer our lives in service to others. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
You did not hesitate, O Christ, to say, "I am he." We would be as brave to stand up for what we believe. We sing Amen and Amen for your life. Soon, when today has passed, we will sing again alleluia to you, our Savior. Amen.

"Ah, Holy Jesus" Tune: HERZLIEBSTER JESU
"Amen, Amen" Tune: AMEN1
