Call To Worship
Selected verses from Psalm 22.
Leader:
My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Why do you not help me in my groaning?
People:
I am a worm, and not a man, that is why I am scorned and despised by the people.
Leader:
All who see me mock me;
People:
People say, "If God is his Father, let the Lord deliver him."
Leader:
Lord, be not far from me. Trouble is near and there is no one to help me but you.
People:
I am surrounded by evil opening its mouth at me, like a roaring lion.
Leader:
I am poured out like water, my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax, it is melted within my chest.
People:
My strength has withered, and my tongue cleaves to my jaws; death is near.
Leader:
Yes, the dogs are around me; a company of evildoers encircle me; they have pierced my hands and feet.
People:
I can count all my bones.
Leader:
They stare and gloat over me;
People:
They divide my garments among them, and cast lots for my robe.
Leader:
I know that you, O God, have not hated and ignored the afflicted; but have heard when I cried to you.
People:
I know that the afflicted shall eat and be satisfied;
Leader:
For all those who seek God shall soon have cause to praise him!
People:
For dominion belongs to the Lord, and he rules over the nations.
Leader:
And he shall rule over my suffering as well.
People:
Amen.

Leader:
He was just an ordinary man,
People:
Not incredibly handsome or noble-looking,
Leader:
Nothing really in his appearance that attracted at all.
People:
He was despised and rejected,
Leader:
A man of sorrows
People:
And familiar with suffering.
Leader:
He was just like us,
People:
Able to sympathize with our weaknesses
Leader:
And tempted in every way,
People:
Just as we are.
Leader:
Yet he was without sin.
People:
In fact, he took our sins upon himself
Leader:
And carried our sorrows
People:
To the cross and to the grave.
Leader:
This ordinary man,
People:
Extraordinary Son of God!

Shed for us.

Prayer Of Confession
(Silence)
In your heart name the sin that keeps you from going further with him -- busyness -- anger -- sexual conduct -- pride ...
Give that sin form -- garbage -- yoke -- chain ...
Now see yourself coming to the cross carrying this sin
Lay it at his feet.
Look into the eyes of Jesus -- see nothing but forgiving love.

Hebrews 10:16-18 (The Message)
Hear the Word of the Lord. This new plan I'm making with the children of God isn't going to be written on paper, isn't going to be written on stone; this time "I'm writing out the plan in them, carving it on the lining of their hearts." What's more, "I'll forever wipe the slate clean of their sins." Our sins are taken care of for good, there's no longer any need to offer sacrifices for them.

Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows,

Yet we considered him stricken by God, and afflicted.

But he was pierced for our transgressions,

He was crushed for our iniquities;
