Growing Up
Children's sermon

Children's Sermons
Object:
A set of children's clothing that is obviously too small for even the youngest of those participating in the children's sermon.
Message: Have any of you received some new clothes this year? I remember when I was growing up there were a number of times each year when we might get new clothes. Sometimes that would be on our birthdays, at Easter time, maybe at Christmas, and almost always at the beginning of the new school year. But that leaves me with a question: Why do we need anything new? Can't we just wear the same clothes year after year? Maybe I could do that as a grown up, but you could never do that because you are still growing. In fact, your parents probably say you are growing so fast they can barely keep up with you!
Today I brought in a set of clothes that I really liked and thought would be great for you to try on. (Show the clothes piece by piece and comment on how great they would look.) How do you think these will fit? You're right, they would be way too small. Did you know that at one time they would have fit you? When you were really small they might have even been too big for you!
The fact that you so quickly outgrew your clothes also tells us something about our faith in God. The older and bigger we become, the more faith God desires us to have in Him. The Bible tells us to "be filled to the measure of the fullness of God." That means we are to grow spiritually as well as physically. God is working in our hearts every day. He is trying to lead us to trust and follow Him more closely. And He wants us to respond by believing in His love more and more. So the next time you get some new clothes because you have outgrown the old ones, remember that Jesus wants your faith in Him to be growing as well.
