"Millard, what do you want to be when you grow up?"
Millard Fuller did not hesitate a moment to think but said immediately, "A millionaire!"
By the time he was thirty, he was a millionaire. He had a house in Palm Beach, California, another in Phoenix, Arizona, and an apartment in New York City, as well as boats and cars.
One day an old school friend came to visit Millard. "You must be the happiest man in the world. I have never eaten such fine food or seen such magnificent art."
Millard groaned. "It tastes like dirt to me. I have never been so unhappy."
The next day Millard sold his homes and boats and cars. He bought himself a small house and began to build homes for people who could not afford to buy them for themselves. He began an organization called Habitat for Humanity.
Soon people around the world joined him in building homes for "humanity." They built thousands of homes every year, gladly giving their time and work and money.
The next time Millard's school friend visited him, they recalled the boats and cars, the rich food and the art, and Millard told his friend, "I have never been happier. It is like changing water into wine," he said, sipping the refreshing ice cold water in his glass.
Talk together: Why was Millard unhappy? What did he do? What made him happy? What makes you happy?
Prayer: Dear Lord, create in us a happy heart and renew the spirit of joy within us. Amen.
