A pastor decided to go on a vacation on short notice. He called a retired pastor to fill the pulpit while he was gone. He said the visiting pastor could have the offering that Sunday. But when the visiting pastor announced at the service that they would be taking a special offering for him, the congregation had not been informed it was supposed to happen.
The ushers were called. They took the offering plates to the pews, then returned with them to the front of the church. It was obvious that the people were not prepared for it and no offerings were in the plates.
Thinking that if he had the ushers pass his hat, the people might be generous, he sent the ushers back to pass the hat and then bring it forward. This they did.
The pastor looked in the hat, saw nothing, turned the hat over and shook it. Nothing fell out. Then he prayed, "I am thankful, Lord, that I got my hat back from this congregation!"
