Playing Time: 4 minutes
Setting: Your church
Props: Two gifts
Costumes: Appropriate for church
Time: The present
Cast: MARLA -- gift giver
LES -- another gift giver
GUY -- a questioner
MARLA: (PLACING A GIFT ON THE ALTAR) I give you this gift, Lord, with all my heart.
GUY: (RISING FROM BEHIND THE ALTAR AND PEERING OVER) Wait. Wait just a minute. What are you doing?
MARLA: I'm bringing a gift to God.
GUY: (CROSSING AROUND ALTAR TO CONFRONT HER) Why?
MARLA: Why? What do you mean, "why?"
GUY: I just wanted to know why you are doing this -- bringing a gift to God.
MARLA: I thought it would be appropriate to bring God a gift.
GUY: Where did you learn that?
MARLA: Well, I don't know. From the Bible, I think.
GUY: Where in the Bible?
MARLA: Well, I don't know. I really don't know.
LES: Is this guy giving you a hard time, Miss?
MARLA: Well, I don't know the Bible that well. But I did want to bring my gift to the altar.
LES: Listen, guy, why not butt out. This lady is bringing her gift and I, for one, don't think you should be bothering her.
GUY: I was just asking what her intentions are.
LES: Yeah, and I'm saying, don't butt in.
GUY: I see you're bringing a gift, too.
LES: Very observant.
GUY: Why do you bring a gift to God?
LES: Are you a trouble maker?
GUY: I seem to be making difficulties, but I don't wish to. I was merely asking what your intentions are in bringing a gift to God.
LES: Okay, wise guy, how about Malachi 3:10 -- "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse."
GUY: Oh, then this is your tithe. I see then, that explains it. Well, thanks. I'm sure the church can use it.
MARLA: This isn't my tithe. I already gave my tithe. This is just a gift.
LES: Now, you just wait a minute. What right have you to question what the lady wants to give to God?
GUY: I was questioning her intentions.
LES: All right, her intentions then. What right do you have to question her intentions? If she wants to bring a gift she can bring it.
GUY: Very true. I was asking why she brought it. And I haven't received an answer. I don't think either one of you know why you brought your gifts.
LES: This is the altar of God, isn't it?
GUY: It is.
LES: Well, I just want to honor God with this gift.
GUY: I don't think so.
LES: You don't think so! You don't think so! So, who cares what you think?
GUY: Maybe no one, but I still don't think you know why you brought these gifts.
LES: Well, I, I don't have to know why. I just brought my gift, and that's all you need to know.
GUY: No, not really. For instance, what if you brought your gift so you could show off in front of someone, say this lady, for example.
LES: You got the wrong guy there.
GUY: Or you simply need a tax write-off.
LES: It's legal.
GUY: Or you gave because you would feel guilty if you didn't.
LES: I remember a scripture. How about Romans 12:1: "Present your bodies a living sacrifice ..."
GUY: You're not presenting your body, are you?
MARLA: I'm not.
LES: Well, neither am I.
GUY: Okay, then, why have you come?
MARLA: To give something to God.
GUY: What does God need?
LES: What?
GUY: I said, what does God need?
LES: Well, nothing, I guess. He is God.
GUY: Right. He is complete within Himself.
MARLA: I get it. Then God doesn't need our gifts.
LES: I guess not. (HE BEGINS TO EXIT)
GUY: Wait a minute. Why not leave your gift on the altar and go and think about your intentions.
MARLA: All right. (SHE LEAVES HER GIFT AND BEGINS TO EXIT)
LES: No way. How am I going to know how it's being used?
GUY: Then you care about how the gift is administered?
LES: Of course I do. I worked hard for that money and I expect it to do the most good in God's Kingdom.
GUY: Would you say there are some strings attached?
LES: Why, no. I just want to make sure that it's used correctly.
GUY: If it's a gift, your responsibility is to bring it. When you leave the gift it is no longer your responsibility.
MARLA: You know, I think I've changed my reason for bringing a gift.
GUY: You have?
LES: Don't let this guy confuse you.
MARLA: I'm not confused. I really want to give something to God because I love Him so much.
GUY: You are the most frustrating individual I have ever met.
MARLA: He loved me so much to take my sins I certainly want to show Him how much I love Him.
GUY: You're serious.
MARLA: Very serious.
GUY: I think you have received something in return.
MARLA: Yes, I have.
GUY: (AS SHE EXITS) I knew your heart. I just wanted you to know.
LES: And how about me?
GUY: What about you?
LES: Tell me about my intentions.
GUY: You already know them.
LES: I do?
GUY: Of course you do. You like to hide your real motives.
LES: I do, eh?
GUY: Yes, you do. You're selfish and that's why you are bringing your gift.
LES: That's ridiculous. Just by bringing my gift I am proving I'm not selfish.
GUY: Certainly not. The reason you brought your gift is in your heart and the reason is you're selfish. You thought by giving your gift God would be in your debt. Well, it doesn't work like that. We are eternally in His debt.
LES: Well, if that's your attitude I'm leaving and I'll just take my gift with me. You'll come asking for it someday. You'll see. You'll see. (HE EXITS)
GUY: I'll see. Yes, I'll see. (EXITS)
