Call To Worship
Leader: "Ho!" God surprises us.
People: "Ho!" God urges us forward.
Leader: "Ho!" God wakes us from sleepless living.
People: "Ho!" God coaxes us toward healthy, full being.
All: Let us hear God's encouraging "Ho!" through and through.
Collect
Turn us around, O God, so we begin to eat from the solid base of the food pyramid instead of constantly nibbling fluff. Turn us around, O God, so that our work avows and fulfills the spirit of our very being. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We admit, God of mercy, that we need your coaxing in order to live full, vital lives. We waste our lives, money, energy, and time here. Draw us away from empty, living deaths. Let us listen to your call to live. In this searching Lenten time, let us become acquainted with the lasting satisfaction of a higher way of life. Amen.
22C Hymns
"God Of Abraham And Sarah" Tune: CONSTANTINE
"There's A Wideness In God's Mercy" Tune: IN BABILONE
"We Are The Cared About People" Tune: KARED ABOUT
Third Sunday In Lent
Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 10:1-13
Theme: Then And Now
Call To Worship
We are here to worship a faithful God who will not let us be tested beyond our strength. We come trusting that our merciful God will also provide the way out so we will be able to endure the testing. Come, let us worship God.
Collect
Leader: God made us. God will preserve us.
People: God hears our cries. God brings relief.
All: God is here. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
More than anything else, God, when grief and shame weigh us down, we need to know that you have not deserted us. When anguish pales us, draining us of resolve, we need to know that you still stand beside us. When we are overwhelmed, it helps to trust you as a steadying force who will offer the way through the turmoil. Amen.
22C Hymns
"Sing Praise To God, Our Highest Good" (vv. 4, 5, 6) Tune: LOBE DEN HERREN
"O Sacred Head, Now Wounded" Tune: PASSION CHORALE
"Great Is [Thy][Your] Faithfulness" Tune: FAITHFULNESS
Third Sunday In Lent
Gospel: Luke 13:1-9
Theme: Give It Some Time
Call To Worship
The easy way is to give up on people. When we decide to give others another chance, we can play an active role in encouraging them. When we choose to "give it some time," let us be ready for the surprises of new vigor.
Collect
Turn our hearts toward giving others the right kind of care, O God of compassion. Help us to be as the gardener who brings earth's rich nourishment to the fig tree. Show us how to clean away weeds that sap vitality. Guide us toward offering unproductive acquaintances what they are unable to provide for themselves. Let us watch, then, their flourishing with joy. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Dear God, when relationships stumble, we want to call it quits. When our first efforts collapse or we fall prey to criticism, we become disillusioned. We underestimate your mighty, healing power. We fail to appreciate the possibility of re-creation that you bring. Turn us away from destruction. Turn us toward hope. Show us the right time to cut down the tree and the right time to nurture it. Amen.
22C Hymns
"I Sing The Mighty Power Of God" Tune: ELLACOMBE
"Healing River Of The Spirit" Tune: BEACH SPRING or JOEL
"How Can I Say Thanks" Tune: MY TRIBUTE
