Call To Worship
Leader: Because God graciously guides us today, we risk our holy meeting of tomorrow as we say,
People: Okay, God, here we are.
Leader: When God asks our church to stretch beyond itself to new ways of serving, we dare to say,
People: Okay, God, here we are.
Leader: God calls us as the people of this church to dream and imagine, to design and hope, and to venture to say,
People: Okay, God, here we are.
Collect
As your love continues to find root, O God, you awaken our sense of holy risking. When you ask who will go for you, who will do the job, you also empower us with the courage to say, "We will." Hear our grateful prayer. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Even as we are tempted to catch the numbing "Woe is me" fear, your presence in our lives startles us into setting aside concern. When we dare agree to your call, O God, something within us lets go. With grateful, adventurous hearts, we come and serve you in the way you need us. Amen.
13C Hymns
"Holy, Holy, Holy" Tune: NICAEA
"O God In Whom All Life Begins" Tune: NOEL
"Designer Of Each Noble Dream" Tune: MELITA
Fifth Sunday After Epiphany
Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 15:1-11
Theme: Appearing
Call To Worship
We need to be convinced of God's nearness when the surrounding evidence of our times wants to sell us on God's absence. Let us listen to hope and give over our energy to hoping. Let us pay attention to the signs God offers us of God's presence. Let us know a strengthening of weary knees.
Collect
Because you continually appear to us, O God, as you continually appeared to those who needed your support after Jesus' death and resurrection, we also can make it through difficult days. Hear our prayers of thanksgiving as we realize it has been you, all the time, engaged in the holy nudging of our spirits. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Just as we get to thinking, O God, that we are unworthy of your notice, you slip into our wilderness with the energy of renewed strength. Just as we resign ourselves to being lost, you find us again. Despite our faults, help us want to be open to your overtures of presence. Through Christ. Amen.
13C Hymns
"When Morning Gilds The Skies" Tune: LAUDES DOMINI
"Strengthen All The Weary Hands" Tune: SONG OF REJOICING
"Before [The][Your] Cross, O Jesus" or "Beneath The Cross Of Jesus" Tune: ST. CHRISTOPHER
Fifth Sunday After Epiphany
Gospel: Luke 5:1-11
Theme: Go Away
Call To Worship
Leader: When God wants us to do things for which we suppose the timing is wrong, we push God away.
People: When God would have us stretch beyond the routine, first we waver and turn our backs.
Leader: Go away from me, God, we say, and God answers,
People: Do not be afraid. I will be with you.
Collect
Is it the accepting silence of your waiting for our response, O God, that gives us time to reconsider what you ask of us and then to let go of our resisting and agree to enter deep, unknown waters? So be it.
Prayer Of Confession
No matter what our spoken excuses, O God, you see the real issue. You know our fears, what makes us scared and what shies us. You know how to persist in teaching us to be valiant and to turn our hearts around to rejoicing. In the name of Christ. Amen.
13C Hymns
"This Is the Day" Tune: NUN DANKET or THIS IS THE DAY
"[All][He][We] Who Would Valiant Be" Tune: ST. DUNSTAN'S
"Jesus Calls Us O'er The Tumult" Tune: GALILEE
