Call to Worship (based on Psalm 8)
Leader: Yahweh, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens,
People: When we look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established;
Leader: What are we that you are mindful of us, that you care for us?
People: Yet you have made us a little lower than yourself, and crowned us with glory and honor.
All: Yahweh, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
Call to Confession
On Trinity Sunday we come to God in all aspects. We call on our Creator, remembering all that has been given to us. We honor our Redeemer, grateful for all that was given for us; and we are called by our Sustainer, who energizes us to continue the search. Let us confess our sins to our God, three in one.
Prayer of Confession
Gracious and kind God, we confess our confusion. It is so hard to think of you in all your wonder. We know you can do anything, but so often it doesn't seem like that. We are wrapped up in our own lives and our own desires, and so often we can't understand your vision for us and for all of your creation. We go against your vision when we destroy your creation and cause death and destruction to creatures and the natural world. We often reject your gift of new life in Christ by simply refusing to ask for forgiveness when we know we need it. We don't take advantage of life--giving activity, preferring instead to stay safely at home, watching television, eating to excess, and thinking only of ourselves. Forgive us, God. Energize us to help others and to protect your creation. Open our hearts to all you have given us. Make us appreciative of all your gifts. Amen.
Assurance of Forgiveness
Jesus said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age." Alleluia! Our sins have been forgiven. Amen.
Scripture Readings
Genesis 1:1-2:4a: We rarely have the opportunity to hear the creation story. What better day to have the reenactment of God in all God's majesty? I would suggest one of two very different ways to present the creation story.
1. If your congregation has a modern dancer or access to a dancer, she/he could interpret the story. Use a narrator at the pulpit and the voice of God outside of the sanctuary with a microphone. God could also be in the balcony - just so the person portraying God cannot be easily seen. The narrator should be able to read this poetry with great expression. The dancer would portray the drama of these words - moving around the sanctuary to a different place as each day is presented. Have the dancer interpret the seventh day right in the middle of the sanctuary.
2. Narration with art. This can be done several ways. Have seven banners made that depict what happens each day of the creation story. This could be an art project with your entire Sunday school, led by adult artists in your church. These banners should be simple, portraying only what is said.
Day 1 - dark, light, wind
Day 2 - dome (sky), waters above and below
Day 3 - land, seas, plants, trees, fruit, seed
Day 4 - light in sky: sun, moon, stars
Day 5 - water creatures, sky creatures
Day 6 - earth creatures, including humans
Day 7 - blessing and hallowing the creation; rest
These banners might be hung at the front of the sanctuary or over the heads of the congregation, or they could be created as cloth stained glass windows. Then simply read the story dramatically with God again not being seen.
Matthew 28:16--20: This is a very short, simple passage, but Jesus' words are incredibly important. They need to be read well, by someone in authority. It could be pantomimed by one of the children's classes, and read by one of your more dramatic readers.
Benediction (based on 2 Corinthians 13)
Leader: Brothers and Sisters, farewell. Paul in his letter to the Corinthians asks that we agree with each other, live in peace; and that the God of love and peace will be with you. Greet each other with the peace of God; know that all the saints also greet you. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. Amen.
