Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle A
First Lesson: Genesis 1:1--2:4a
Theme: Trinity -- In The Beginning
Call To Worship
Leader: In the beginning,
People: God was.
Leader: In our new beginnings,
People: God is.
All: In all beginnings, forever, God is.
Collect
God of all creation, we marvel at your capacity to create and re-create. We stand in awe at the evidence of your obvious perennial caring for your whole world. How wonderful that each human creature is a unique part of your creative expression. We praise you and celebrate your creation. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Creator God, we are aware of the two sides of beginnings. On the one hand, we are afraid of beginnings, God, because they are new. Beginnings change us. We forget about courage. We forget to believe. We would rather stay inside the known womb of certainty. On the other hand, we revel in the refreshing creativity of the new. The start of a day offers the grace of beginning again after leaving behind the worn-out ideas and musty ways of doing things. Renew our courage, our sense of celebration, and our joy. Amen.
37A Hymns
"Morning Has Broken" with "Living With Birthing" Tune: BUNESSAN1
"Creation's Lord, We Give Thee Thanks" Tune: RAMWOLD OR "Creator God, Creating Still" Tune: ST. ANNE
"Holy, Holy, Holy" Tune: NICAEA
____________
1. Start with "Morning Has Broken," choir/congregation alternating with verses of "Living With Birthing," ending with first verse again of "Morning."
The Holy Trinity
Second Lesson: 2 Corinthians 13:11-13
Theme: Trinity -- Goodbye
Call To Worship
Are your last words as you go out the door also lasting words? We have probably all played the "if you could only take three items with you" game. What last words would you say to people who are important to you? Here are the Apostle Paul's last words to the Corinthians: Put things in order, listen to my appeal, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. What memorable words would you offer?
Collect
Gracious God of farewells as well as hellos, you teach us how to say goodbye. You remind us this Trinity Sunday of how the forms in life change -- you from Creator to Savior to Sustaining Holy Spirit -- yet the essence remains the same. Thank you, O Compassionate One, for understanding our need to know your eternal presence. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We bark out last minute laundry lists to college graduates, to kids off to summer play, to relatives leaving on trips. The list lengthens as we wave. Long after they are out of sight, our thoughts follow them with additions now stretching into other things we have always wanted to tell them. It is hard to say goodbye, God, hard to let them go, hard to believe they have compiled their own solid, sensible, sensitive lists. How did you ever let Jesus go, God? Teach us how to say goodbye. Amen.
37A Hymns
"All Glory Be To God On High" Tune: ALLEIN GOTT IN DER H…H
"Children Of The Heavenly Father" or "Surely No One Can Be Safer" Tune: TRYGGARE KAN INGEN VARA
"O God, Thou Art The Father" Tune: DURROW
The Holy Trinity
Gospel: Matthew 28:16-20
Theme: Trinity -- Always
Call To Worship
Leader: Hear and carry with you these words: And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.
People: Whatever our assignment -- activity or inactivity,
Leader: Jesus said, "I am with you always."
People: Whatever our responsibility -- invigorating, overwhelming, or disappointing,
Leader: Jesus said, "I am with you always, to the end of the age."
Collect
We hear an inner song, O God, a song of comfort, a song of encouragement, a song of "I am with you always." Thank you. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Like summer dismissal of school, when the urge toward irresponsibility rampages through our homes, we hear your nudge as well as your comfort, "I am with you always." As we abandon wintertime activities, remind us that you, O God, take no leave of us these days. Because of Christ. Amen.
37A Hymns
"Come, Holy Spirit, Heavenly Dove" Tune: ST. AGNES
"O Holy God, Whose Gracious Power Redeems Us" Tune: WELWYN
"In My Heart There Rings A Melody" or "There's Within My Heart A Melody" Tune: SWEETEST NAME
