Lectionary Devotional For Cycle A
Object:
O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
-- Psalm 8:9
The praise of God finds its expression in creation in a manner that cannot be silenced. The very majesty of creation evokes praise. The incredible conditions that had to come together to enable life to exist on this planet makes belief that it was all by chance more incredible than belief in God. The very complexity of the human body, from the way it converts food into energy to the muscles in the foot that enables us to stand, makes design far more plausible than chance. Yet, the risky wisdom of allowing the human animal to have the capacity to exercise "dominion over the works of thy hands" fills us with both wonder and fear. The responsibility given to humans for the care of the universe is at times overwhelming. We are all too aware that the necessary creative drive within humans can easily be distorted by arrogance, fear, and greed. Dominion is a carefully balanced power and responsibility. When we forget that it was God who had entrusted us with such a responsibility, dominion can easily become a desire for domination. Only regular praise enables us to retain the perspective that keeps us truly human. "O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is thy name."
