I Hope Our New Earth Gets Done On Time
Preaching
Shaking Wolves Out Of Cherry Trees
And 149 Other Sermon Ideas
Purpose Statement: It is the Christian pastor's obligation to preach periodically on ecology and the good stewardship of our environment.
Scripture: Psalm 8 (the wonder of God's magnificent creation and our place of responsibility), Genesis 1 and 2 (the creation and the garden of paradise), Hosea 4:1-3 (no love in the land and the land and animals will die), Revelation 21:1-4 (a new heaven and a new earth).
a. Devastation. There are so many statistics available to sensitize us dramatically to the destruction of our environment: air and water pollution, depletion of natural resources (forests, oil, ozone layer, and minerals), erosion of land, paving over productive land, the waste in throw-away products for land fill, etc.
b. Reflection. We should continually remind ourselves of the need to be good stewards of this earth, which is a gift from God. We are rapidly moving towards destroying the planet for our descendents and ourselves. Taking good care of our environment is sound theology.
c. Restoration. Present a list of ways to become good citizens and stewards environmentally.
1. Recycle.
2. Bus, bicycle, or walk whenever possible.
3. Don't litter or waste.
4. Conserve power and water.
5. Join an effective conservation group.
6. Keep legislators informed.
7. (Plus many other possibilities)
Somewhere I read that it costs $80 million a day to have clean water in our world while we spend $240 million each day on cigarettes and almost one and a half billion dollars on war weapons.
