Object: an egg timer
Good morning, boys and girls. Today we are going to talk about Mary, the mother of Jesus. All of us know that Mary was the mother of Jesus, but, except for Christmas and maybe a few other times, we never talk much about her. God chose Mary to be the mother of Jesus for his own special reasons. We don't know why he chose her instead of some other woman, except that she was related to King David who had died a long time before Jesus or Mary were born. But God had his special reasons, and we think he chose the perfect mother for Jesus.
I suppose that Mary would have been loved by many and a good friend to a lot of people, even if she had never been chosen to be the mother of Jesus. But the thing that really made her special was the fact that she listened to God when he spoke, and she obeyed what he told her, and she became the mother of Jesus. God wanted his Son Jesus to be like other people. He did not want to just plop Jesus down on earth as a grown--up man and pretend that he had grown up as other people. He did not want to have a man called his Son who did not know what it was like to be loved by a mother who cared for him when he was a child. He wanted his Son to be as much like the other people as he could be and still be the Son of God. Then God chose just the right time in our history to send his Son into the world.
It is almost the same way that your mother or father cooks an egg. Have you ever watched one of them soft--boil an egg? Your mom or dad times it so it doesn't cook too long or too short. The time must be just right. The reason a lot of cooks use a timer is so that they will know just the right time to cook the eggs. That is why your eggs taste so good. A good cook knows just the right amount of time to cook the eggs.
Now that is the way God works. God has a schedule, a time schedule, and he knew just when he wanted his Son born into the world. He chose Mary to be the mother and by doing it that way made her the most famous mother in all of history. But Mary was a good mother - the best - because she trusted everything to God. She knew that God was right, that he would not make a mistake, and that her son would be his Son.
Maybe the next time you see your mom or dad time an egg, you will remember how God timed his Son, and when it was just the right time, he chose Mary to be the mother of Jesus.
