The Sermon:
It's summer time. Do you ever go fishing in the summer? Fresh-caught fish, cleaned and cooked, are good to eat and fishing is fun if we are catching fish. If not, it can be disappointing.
Jesus had disciples who were fishermen. Simon Peter, James, and John were fishermen, but for them fishing was work, hard work. They didn't use a pole with a line and bait on a hook as we probably would. They went out in a boat on lakes and dropped a big, heavy net into the water. It was hard work and it was serious, because this is the way that they earned their living. If they caught no fish, they didn't make any money. The Bible tells us about one night when they had fished all night, but never caught any fish. They came back to shore to wash their nets and to listen to what Jesus was teaching.
Luke 5:4-7 says, "When he [Jesus] had finished speaking, he said to Simon, 'Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.' Simon answered, 'Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets.' When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink."
After fishing all night, Jesus told Simon Peter to try again. *And when they obeyed Jesus, did as he said, they caught so many fish that the nets began to break and they had to get help from their partners in another boat.
What if Simon Peter had argued with Jesus? What if he'd said, "Lord, you are wrong -- there are no fish out there" or, "We worked all night and we are too tired"?
They wouldn't have caught any fish. They would have missed out on something really wonderful. They obeyed!
We can learn something from this story. It's always best to obey Jesus. Something good will happen when we do. It's important to obey Jesus.
How can we know what Jesus wants so that we can obey him? The Bible tells us. That is why it's important to know what the Bible says. It's important to read it and hear it taught. It tells us what Jesus has said. We won't miss out on good things if we obey Jesus.
