It's A Myth!

A prominent citizen of a central Ohio community retired, and then spent a year visiting homes of citizens of the local school district to find out if it was true that school tax levies had been defeated by votes of Senior Citizens. This myth has often been stated by persons who just do not know the facts.
The study of the retired realtor revealed several things quite typical of many school districts.
1. There were not enough Senior Citizens able to vote to decide the issue. Health reasons prevented them from voting.
2. The persons voting against the taxes were other taxpayers, many with children in the schools, who were unwilling to add more to what they owed for their property, their new homes, and nice cars.
Hearing of the report from the study, a local factory executive reported that the company was considering moving operations elsewhere if the tax levies were not passed. They now have better schools!
This is a striking illustration of a myth that is like so many myths in our modern American society. It would be better to know the facts before placing the blame.
