Jars Of Bad Candy

Matthew To Revelation
Object: a jar full of candy
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have heard the word hypocrite spoken by someone? (let them answer) It is one of the favorite words for big people. They use it a lot. It is usually someone else they are talking about, but sometimes they even use it when they are talking about themselves. It is a big word. Say it with me: hypocrite. One more time: hypocrite. Do you think that a hypocrite is someone good or bad? (let them answer)
I have an example of a hypocrite with me this morning, only it isn't a person. I hope you will understand a little better what a hypocrite is when we finish talking about it this morning. You will know if a hypocrite is good or bad.
I have a large jar of candy. It has every kind of candy that I could find and it makes my mouth water just to look at it. How many of you like candy? (let them answer) How would you like to sit down right now and just eat every piece of candy you wanted until your tummy was filled? (let them answer) I know how you feel. Just think of all the candy you can eat and it would not cost you a dime. It looks good, it tastes good, and a lot of people would eat it. But before you eat it, I want you to know that this candy would be like poison to you if you ate it all. No matter how good it looks, the sugar in this candy would make your teeth rotten. If you ate this candy and some more like it, you would soon find that you were not only very fat, but that your teeth would almost fall out of your mouth.
Do you remember that we said it looks good and tastes good, but now I want you to know that it would be bad for you. It is a bad trap to rot your teeth.
Hypocrites are like a big jar of candy. They look wonderful and talk wonderful, but they are mean inside and try to cause trouble. There were many hypocrites trying to trap Jesus into saying or doing something that would be against the law. They wanted Jesus to go away so that they would not have to see the good that he did and then could do the bad without being ashamed. Jesus made the hypocrites feel ashamed.
If you ate that jar of candy, the worst would happen to you. That is too much candy. If you talk and act one way and think another, you can be a hypocrite. The next time you see something that is tempting and looks so good but you know it is really bad for you, then you will want to think about the hypocrites and the way that they tried to trap Jesus.
