Questions
1. What disease did these ten men have?
2. When a person had that sickness, what were they forced to do?
3. What did Jesus tell them to do?
4. When were they healed?
5. How many of the ten came back to thank Jesus?
Narrator: The most feared disease in Jesus' day was leprosy. So frightened were people of that sickness that every infected person was driven from their home and town. They were forced to live out in the fields, begging for enough food to survive.
Man 1: How much longer can we last?
Man 2: Unless we get more food, we'll die within weeks.
Man 3: We can't go into the village and beg. It's forbidden by law.
Man 2: Look at these ugly blotches, this rotting flesh hanging on my bones. We've become repulsive to our friends and repulsive to our own families.
Man 3: When we die, no one will grieve. Even our loved ones will thank God to be rid of us.
Man 1: It's hopeless. All that awaits us is a lingering, agonizing death, alone, forsaken by all, even God ... unless ... unless ... Have you ever heard of Jesus of Nazareth?
Man 2: Never heard of ... oh, wait! Isn't he that prophet some call the Messiah?
Man 3: I've heard his name mentioned. What about him?
Man 1: It's rumored that he's performed some remarkable cures -- the blind, the lame, the deaf, the mentally sick. And I've heard that he's coming through our town, heading for Jerusalem.
Man 2: What can he do with our disease? The doctors couldn't do anything. Well, maybe he could give us some food or better clothing, but nothing lasting.
Man 3: Look, there's a group of men coming this way. Maybe it's Jesus. Yes, it is Jesus and his disciples. (calls out) Jesus! Great prophet of Nazareth. Have pity on us lepers.
Man 2: We are cursed with this dreaded disease. We're hungry and homeless. Can you help us?
Jesus: Those healed of leprosy must go to the priest, who will certify that they are cleansed. So why are you waiting? Go to the priest.
Man 1: But Lord, we are lepers. See the blemishes on our skin?
Jesus: Dare to believe and the glory of God will be revealed in your bodies. Now go, show yourselves to the priest.
Man 1: Lord, I will do what you say. Come on friends, let's go.
Man 3: But I'm still covered with these blotches. We can't enter the city to see the priest. The people will stone us.
Man 1: Let's trust Jesus. What have we to lose? I'm leaving. Are you coming?
Man 2: I'm coming!
Man 3: Me, too! (all three begin panting from running)
Man 1: (pants) Look! My flesh! It's ... it's ...
Man 3: (pants) Mine, too. It's almost clear.
Man 2: (pants) Jesus has done it! He's actually cured us!
Man 3: (pants) I'll soon be back with my family and friends.
Man 2: (pants) Hurry! Let's find the rabbi and begin to live again!
Man 1: (pants) Wait! Jesus has healed us! We must go back and thank him.
Man 3: (pants) Forget about Jesus. I'm going to the priest and then to my family.
Man 1: (quietly) Jesus, Master, I had to come back.
Jesus: You are clean.
Man 1: Yes, Lord, thanks to you. I wasn't sure you would help me, for I am a Samaritan.
Jesus: There were ten healed. Where are the other nine?
Man 1: They were so happy, they've gone to celebrate.
Jesus: In their joy they have forgotten to praise God.
Man 1: I guess it happens that way. When we're happy, we forget the one who gives us joy.
