What did Jesus say about Mary anointing him?
Narrator: During the last week of Jesus' life, our Lord and his disciples spent at least one night in Bethany at the home of Mary and Martha. There they could relax in the friendly atmosphere of the two sisters who deeply loved their Lord.
Thomas: Martha, you outdid yourself with this magnificent meal. You must have spent hours preparing it.
Judas: She must have spent quite a sum of money to purchase the food.
Jesus: It's Martha's way of showing devotion. It was a lovely expression of love, Martha. Thank you for all the work you put into this feast, and God bless you for inviting us to your home this evening.
Mary: Lord, I too have a gift for you -- this jar of the very finest perfume.
Judas: (whispers loudly) What is she going to do with that vase?
Thomas: (also whispers) She's going to pour its contents over Jesus' head.
Mary: Jesus, this is my offering of love for you. May it please you.
Judas: That's extremely expensive perfume. Why, it must be worth a year's wages.
Thomas: She's actually pouring its entire contents on Jesus' head!
Jesus: Oh, Mary, thank you. I know what a great sacrifice this is for you.
Mary: It's no sacrifice, Lord. It's a gift given with joy.
Judas: (mildly displeased) Mary, how could you waste that perfume like that? Think of the money you've just thrown away, and for what? For one moment of sentimental folly.
Thomas: (a little uncertainly) It does seem it could have been put to a more practical use.
Judas: Indeed, it could have and should have. Pouring out that rare perfume didn't feed one hungry person ...
Thomas: Nor clothe someone dressed in rags ...
Judas: Nor pay for the treatment of one sick individual ...
Thomas: Nor shelter one homeless soul ...
Judas: It certainly could have been put to a much better use! It was an utter waste!
Jesus: Friends, leave this dear woman alone. Nothing is a waste when it expresses love. Mary, it was not a waste; it was a beautiful deed. Thank you.
Judas: But, Jesus, that money could have helped countless poor people.
Jesus: There will always be poor people, and you must help them as often and as generously as you possibly can.
Thomas: We will, Lord.
Jesus: Then you will fulfill the law to love your neighbor. But, that is the second commandment. The greatest command is to love God. Mary has just done that. She has fulfilled the greatest command by showing her love for me.
Mary: I do love you, Lord. I always will.
Jesus: This demonstration of love for me is the very heart of God's will. I tell you, wherever the gospel will be preached, this story of her love must be told over and over.
