Object: a nail, a golf club, and a match
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought some things along with me this morning that I hope you will learn a lesson from. (take out the golf club, the match, and the nail) I have a riddle for you. What is the same about this match, this nail, and this golf club? (let them answer) All of them have something that we call the same name. (give them some hints) Do you give up? (let them answer) This is a pretty tough riddle so let me give you the answer. All three things, the match, the nail, and the golf club, have heads. (point out where the head is on each one) That may sound funny to you, but we call each of these things heads, just like we call your head a head. We strike the head of a match and make fire. We pound he head of a nail, and we hit the golf ball with the head of the club. Your head has a lot of things to do such as think, see, hear, smell, taste, and many others. The head is where the business is done or where the important part of the work begins.
Jesus is also the head. The Bible calls Jesus the head of something that all of us love. Do you know what Jesus is the head of? (let them answer) Jesus is the head of the Church. The Apostle Paul calls Jesus the head of the Church. Who do you think is the body if Jesus is the head of it? (let them answer) That's right, we are the body of the Church. Jesus Christ is the head of the Church and we are the body of the Church. We go together. Jesus is the head because he is the leader and gives the body direction. We are the body because we follow where Jesus leads us. Jesus taught, and still teaches us, and we learn and do what he says. That is the reason that the Bible calls Jesus the head of the Church. We are the arms, legs, chest, and back of the Church.
The next time you see a nail or a match or a golf club or even when you look at one another, and you look at the heads of one another, I hope you will think about how the Bible teaches that Jesus is the head of the Church, and how we are the body of the Church, and how we work together.
