Questions
1.
Why did so many people gather around Jesus when he arrived?
2.
Why do you suppose Jesus healed that one woman and not all the others?
3.
How was she healed?
4.
Why do you think Jesus wanted to talk to her after she was healed?
Narrator: Jesus and his disciples had been on the far side of Lake Galilee. There the Lord had healed a man with a violent nature and with almost superhuman strength. Jesus restored the man to sanity and having completed his exhausting mission, Jesus and his followers left in a boat. Now they have just returned to their home territory. They are met by a huge crowd.
Peter: All right, folks. Move back so Jesus can step ashore.
Woman 1: Give Jesus a chance to breathe. Some of us need to talk with the Master, to let him try to heal us.
Woman 2: Jesus, I've brought my sick brother for you to help. He can't talk clearly, and half his body is paralyzed. I think he's had a stroke.
Jairus: My need is more urgent. My twelve-year-old daughter is dying. Please come with me and do what you can to spare her life.
Woman 3: (desperately) Please! Please! Won't you people let me through? I'm desperately sick and need to reach Jesus.
Man: I've come over a day's journey just to hear Jesus. I want to hear about what God is going to do in the near future. I want to learn if there's going to be another war, a crushing plague. I need to know if God is willing to forgive our sins. Rabbi, I beg you to take the time to teach us.
Woman 3: (desperately) I've spent all my money on doctors, but nothing they do has helped. Have mercy, Jesus, and heal me of this wretched bleeding. If not, I will surely die.
Jairus: My daughter is actually dying. Master, can you understand what that means to a father who loves his helpless twelve-year-old child?
Woman 2: What about my brother? He just lays there on his bed, moaning, completely helpless, desperately hoping that God will send someone to cure him.
Man: I need to find God, to have my life changed, to get back my wife and children. Jesus, you're a man of God, help me find a new start in life.
Woman 1: (desperately) Won't you people let me through? I'm desperately sick and need to talk with Jesus.
Peter: Look, folks. We've just had an exhausting time on the other side of the lake. The teacher needs a little time to rest and a little room to breathe. Please stop pressing in so tightly.
Jairus: Master, my twelve-year-old daughter is critically ill. Please, oh, please, hurry and come to my home and place your hand upon her. Unless a miracle occurs, she's sure to die.
Jesus: I will go with you, Jairus. Lead the way.
Jairus: (calls out to the crowd) Please, friends. Let the Master through. He is trying to hurry to my daughter's sickbed.
Woman 3: Oh, no! Jesus is leaving! My one chance to be healed is gone! He's actually moving away. Perhaps I can reach him if these people will just get out of my way.
Narrator: Hey, lady! Stop pushing! Who do you think you are, anyway?
Woman 3: I'm sorry, but I'm critically ill. I desperately need Jesus' help.
Woman 1: You and everybody else in this crowd. I've got a sick brother with a wife and kids. He needs help just as much as you, so stop trying to shove us.
Woman 2: Who says your problem is any worse than the rest of our problems? Stop pushing.
Man: Back off, lady, or I'll do a little shoving of my own.
Woman 3: (pitifully) I've suffered from this ailment for twelve years. I've spent a fortune on doctors, only to get worse. Only Jesus can help. I must reach Jesus. I must! I will! Ah! I've touched his garment.
Jairus: Jesus, why are you stopping? We must hurry to my daughter.
Jesus: Someone touched me. I felt power go out from my body. (calls out to the crowd) Who was it that touched me? He or she needs to confess it.
Peter: Who touched you? With this great throng pressing in around us, and you expect to discover who bumped into you?
Jesus: I need to talk to the one who was healed. That person needs to confess the goodness of God in healing her.
Peter: (calls out) All right, who was it? Step forward.
Woman 3: (after a brief pause --with awe and wonder) Lord, I ... I touched you, and in that moment the power of God filled my body and I was healed. Lord, I'm healed! You've healed me! Oh, thank you, Lord. I will ever praise you, the servant of God.
Jesus: (warmly) You indeed are made whole. Your faith has made you well. So go in peace and live trusting God to keep you in perfect health of body and spirit.
