Jesus' Job Description
Children's sermon
The Giant Book Of Children's Sermons
Matthew To Revelation
Object: a blackboard, some chalk, and some ideas on the job description of a mother
Good morning, boys and girls. Have you all been busy since I saw you last week? I know I have been busy. Sometimes it seems like adults are always busy, doesn't it? I think some of the busiest people are mothers. I thought that we might make a list of some of the things that your mother does, and then we can all see how busy she is. You tell me what your mother does for you and I will make a list on the blackboard. (invite some responses and prod where necessary with some things that they may not think about)
That is quite a list. And we have forgotten a lot of the things that a mother does every day. I know this: if I showed this list of things to someone who was not here this morning they would guess right away that we were talking about a mother's job.
Now I am going to give you another list and I want you to tell me who you think this job belongs to. This person makes the blind see, the crippled walk; he heals the very sick and can make deaf people hear. This person can even make the dead come back to life and, finally, he takes care of the poor and gives them hope with which to live. Do you now who can do all of this and even more? (let them answer)
That's right; this was the job that Jesus was sent to do. That is the work of the Savior, and no one else in the whole world can do that job but he. No doctor or preacher or father or mother, or anyone else can do it. Just the Savior.
A long time ago John the Baptizer sent his disciples to ask Jesus if he was the one that everyone was waiting for or if they should look for another. Jesus told them just what I told you. He told John's disciples to look around and see what was happening and to realize that this was the work of the Savior. Then he told them to go back to John and tell him what they saw.
Each of us has something that we are supposed to do, just as our mothers do all of the things that mothers can do. But the job of Jesus is a very special one, and we call his work the work of the Savior.
The next time someone asks you about Jesus' work, you can tell them the things that he does that no one else can do.
