Jesus Our Parachute

Matthew To Revelation
Object: a parachute (tie some strings to a handkerchief and attach a weight)
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have ever been rescued? (let them answer) Some of you have had some very close calls. When I think of being rescued, I think of firefighters, police officers, or people who are extra brave and help others even where there is great danger.
Sometimes there are things that rescue us as people do. I have something here that has rescued a lot of people who fly. It is a pretty small one, but I am sure you will know what I am talking about when I show you this little piece of cloth with some strings attached to it. What do you call this? (let them answer) That's right; a parachute. People who fly planes have parachutes, and if something is wrong with the plane and it is going to crash, then they use the parachute. It isn't a toy - it is a big help if we need to be rescued.
Well, that is kind of the way that Jesus is for all of us. He is like our parachute. We were all headed for a big crash when he came along. Without Jesus, the Bible tells us, we would all end up with the devil, but because Jesus came we are now going to live safely with God. Isn't that wonderful? Here we are going along like we are sure to crash when all of a sudden we are given some help. And instead of ending up in a wreck, we are all floating to safety in the hands of Jesus. Jesus is our parachute.
I hope that you remember this the next time you see a movie or read a book where someone using a parachute is saved. You can think to yourself how glad you are to have Jesus just as the flyer has his parachute. With Jesus we are safe and sound, but without him we are bound to have an awful crash. You can't do anything about a plane that is crashing. You can't get out or run away. You must just sit there and wait for it to happen. That is, unless you have a parachute and you know how to use it. Then you will float safely to the ground.
The same is true about Jesus. Without Jesus we were all going to the devil and there was nothing that we could do. Then God sent Jesus to us and he brought us safely to his world. That's why we love Jesus so much and why we are so grateful for his saving us.
Will you remember that Jesus is like our parachute? (let them answer) That's good.
