Why do you think Jesus asked Peter three times if he loved him?
Narrator: The risen Lord had returned to the disciples several times on Easter and the weeks following. But then several days passed without Jesus appearing. Peter had grown restless, waiting for Jesus to reappear. So he and several of the disciples traveled up north to Lake Galilee. They went fishing, but without much success.
Peter: (disgustedly) We've been fishing all night and haven't caught one single fish.
John: Maybe the Lord's trying to tell us something.
Peter: Like what?
John: Like we should have stayed in Jerusalem and waited for Jesus to give us further instructions.
Peter: Well, I can't sit around twiddling my thumbs, doing nothing. Besides, fishing helps me relax.
John: Our fishing has been relaxing, all right. We haven't had to lift out one single fish.
Jesus: (calls) Have you folks caught anything?
Peter: (calls back) Nothing! It's been a complete waste of time.
Jesus: Throw your net in on the other side of your boat.
Peter: It won't do any good. We've not been catching anything on either side.
Jesus: Have a little faith. Give it a try.
Peter: There! I hope you're satisfied. The net is on the other side, but it didn't do any good. It's still empty, like I told you. (gasps) Hey! The net! It's filling up! It's really filling up! What a catch! Our net may not hold it all! Thanks, fellow. You sure brought us luck.
John: Peter, I don't think it was luck. (with awe) I think that man on shore is ... is Jesus! He's come back to us again!
Peter: Jesus? You may be right. I'm going to find out. I'm swimming to shore. John, you and the others can bring in the boat and net.
Narrator: Peter plunged into the lake and swam to shore. The stranger on the beach was indeed Jesus. What a glad reunion they had! After they had finished breakfast, Jesus took Peter aside.
Jesus: Peter, I want to ask you a question. Do you love me or do you love fishing most of all?
Peter: (nonchalantly) Well, of course, Lord, I love you more than I love fishing. It's ridiculous to even ask it.
Jesus: If you really love me, then do what I've called you to do. Preach the gospel. Take care of my followers.
Peter: Okay, Lord, I'll do what you say.
Jesus: Then you really love me completely? Enough to leave your occupation, your family, your friends?
Peter: Sure, Lord. I've already told you, I really do love you.
Jesus: Then tell the world what you know about me and take care of my followers.
Peter: (a little annoyed) Okay, I said I would.
Jesus: Then I can count on you, because you do love me, love me enough to keep on doing my work?
Peter: (very annoyed) How many times do I have to say it? I'm your friend and I'll do whatever you ask. There now I've said it three times! (suddenly thoughtful) Three times. Three times I denied knowing you, but you still want me? You've forgiven my cowardliness?
Jesus: I told you in the upper room that you would deny me, but that I would pray for you, that when you came back, you should strengthen the rest of my followers.
Peter: And I will do that, I promise. But what about the others? What do you want them to do?
Jesus: Don't worry about the others. You just make sure you stay faithful as long as you live.
