Series VII, Cycle A
Call To Worship
Think, for a moment, of God's care for the poor. The opportunity to glean after the harvesters was not charity, but God's expectation. Thanks to God's life-giving law it was possible for Ruth, the outsider, the hated foreigner, to harvest the gleanings of the field for her desolate mother-in-law. The leftovers gave life. Ruth was an ancestor of King David - and King Jesus. Does Ruth walk in our midst, ignored, today?
Collect
Your law gives life, and fills that life with abundance. Your love is just and shields us from vengeance. Thank you, Lord, for the way you care for your community. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
If we are tempted to look down at those who need help we have turned our back on your family, Lord. If we are too proud to accept, too proud to ask for help when it is needed then we have bought into the myth of independence that plagues our stiff-necked society. We need each other, and we need you. Forgive us. Heal us. Amen.
Hymns
"For Christ And The Church"
"Be Present At Our Table, Lord"
"Heart With Loving Heart"
Seventh Sunday After Epiphany
Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 3:10-11, 16-23
Theme: Think About It
Call To Worship (1 Corinthians 3:11)
... no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ.
Collect (built around 1 Corinthians 3:16)
Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? Always and everywhere, and especially in this place, present yourself as the special person God has created. Lord, fill us with your clear vision for our selves and our lives. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Can it be, Lord, that we have lost sight of your goodness and mercy? Can it be we have allowed ourselves to ignore your law so we might engage in fractious infighting? Have we divided ourselves into parties rather than gathered together in Christ? You know, O Lord, what is in our heart! We confess to you that we are made whole through your mercy and grace. Amen.
Hymns
"Built On The Rock The Church Doth Stand"
"The Church's One Foundation"
"How Firm A Foundation"
Seventh Sunday After Epiphany
Gospel Lesson: Matthew 5:38-48
Theme: One More Lap
Call To Worship (Matthew 5:48)
Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Collect
Redeemer, our salvation comes not in our own imagined perfection, but in your molding, your shaping, your redemption which you offer to us. As you have saved us, challenge us through our worship today to perfect others by redeeming their lives as well. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
The world wants so much. You, Lord of our lives, want more. The world demands the letter of the law. You, Lord of mercy, desire its fulfillment. The world offers measure for measure. You, Lord of eternity, offer abundance. Thank you, Lord, for pushing us farther, beyond our comfort, to our redemption. Amen.
Hymns
"Take Time To Be Holy"
"Oh, Love, How Deep, How Broad, How High!"
"Wonderful Grace Of Jesus"
