Object: a round key ring with a lot of keys and one large key
Good morning, boys and girls. Today is a wonderful day to share with one another and to thank God for being so good to us. I have been thinking about a lot of things recently and one of them is the idea that we are sharing a promise that was given to Jesus.
Do you remember hearing about when Jesus died? (let them answer) I remember that also. You and I will also die. We hope that we will not have to die in the same way that Jesus did, but we know that we must still all die sometime. We stop breathing, we stop running or walking, we stop eating, and all of the other things that we do now, and we die. The same thing happened to Jesus.
But do you also remember that Jesus came back to life again? We call that the Resurrection. When Jesus came back to life, he ate and drank, walked, talked, breathed, and he also did some things that he did not do before he died. God promises that the same thing will happen to all of us. We will also be resurrected in the same way that Jesus was resurrected.
I brought a key ring to help show you what it means to be a Christian and to share in the promise that God makes to us. The Bible talks about being united with Jesus in his death, and in his Resurrection. The key ring is the uniter. The big key is Jesus and all of the rest of us are the other keys. If I put the key ring in my pocket all of the keys go in my pocket. If I take the keys out and lay them down, then all of the keys lay down. If I carry the keys in my hands, then all of the keys are in my hand. The key ring unites us with Jesus and with one another. When we are Christians, we are united with Jesus and with one another.
That is the way that God has planned it. We are sharing our lives with one another, but most of all we are sharing our lives with Jesus. Jesus died and we shall die. But Jesus was also resurrected and had a new life that was even better than the first one, and we shall have the same.
The next time you see a key ring and you think about all of the keys on the ring, I hope you think about the way that they are united and how we are also united with Jesus in death and resurrection.
