The Last Days
Drama
SUNDAY MORNING READERS' THEATER
Cast: PREACHER and CONGREGATION, three WOMEN and three MEN
Length:
7 minutes
Seven stools are arranged in a "V" shape leading away from the audience with the PREACHER's stool at the apex. The PREACHER takes his stool first and settles himself self-importantly. The members of the CONGREGATION file in slowly and take the remaining stools. The CONGREGATION will keep their eyes on the PREA CHER throughout their time on stage but their stools should be arranged so that they will not have to turn their faces too far away from the audience.
PREACHER: (In a loud and impressive voice) Praise to God that we are gathered here once again to celebrate a new day!
CONGREGATION: Amen!
PREACHER: There will not be many more such days and we must give thanks for each and every one.
CONGREGATION: Amen!
PREACHER: And why will there not be many more such days? Because the day of the Lord is nigh!
CONGREGATION: Amen!
PREACHER: The day is coming that is revealed in the scriptures, the day of our Lord's second coming!
CONGREGATION: Amen!
PREACHER: And what should be our response to such a glorious day? We should be alert, alert at all times, praying that we may have the strength to escape all the horrors that are about to take place, and to stand up and raise our heads before the Son of Man!
CONGREGATION: Amen!
PREACHER: For these horrors will come upon all who live on the face of the earth! There will be signs in the sun, the moon and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves.
All members of the CONGREGATION except the 3RD WOMAN grow more and more hysterical as the PREACHER continues his tirade.
CONGREGATION: (Variously) Ooooh! No! Protect us!
PREACHER: For these are days of vengeance, as a fulfillment of all that is written.
CONGREGATION: Praise God!
PREACHER: But woe to those who are pregnant and those who are nursing infants in those days!
CONGREGATION: Oh, woe!
1ST WOMAN: But, Preacher! I'm pregnant right now! Five months along. What should I do? Where should I go?
PREACHER: The scripture says that those in Judea must flee to the mountains and those inside the city must leave it and those out in the country must not enter it.
1ST WOMAN: What about me? What must I do to be safe?
PREACHER: Well, since you live in the city, you should flee to the mountains.
1ST WOMAN: I will! I will! This very minute! She jumps up and rushes out.
PREACHER: For there will be great distress on the earth and wrath against this people; they will fall by the edge of the sword and be taken away as captives among all the nations.
CONGREGATION: (Variously) No! No! Help us! Don't let that happen!
1ST MAN: What must we do? Tell us, Preacher!
PREACHER: Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life or that day will catch you unexpectedly like a trap.
1ST MAN: But, Preacher! I have often been distracted by the worries of this life.
PREACHER: Then woe on you! For you will not endure the last days!
1ST MAN: What must I do?
PREACHER: You must change your wicked ways. And quickly! We may not have much time left! The day of the Lord is coming soon!
1ST MAN: Yes! I will!
1ST MAN jumps up and rushes out.
PREACHER: In that day people will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
CONGREGATION: (Moaning) Oh, no!
PREACHER: Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
CONGREGATION: What shall we do? Preacher, tell us!
PREACHER: As it says in the scriptures, those in Judea must flee to the mountains and those inside the city must leave it and those out in the country must not enter it.
2ND MAN: But what does that mean? What about us?
PREACHER: You must sell all you possess and give it to the church and you will be spared.
2ND MAN: Yes! I will! This very day!
He jumps up and rushes out.
PREACHER: And we must leave this city and gather on the mountaintop to await the Redeemer's coming. For as the scriptures say, when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.
2ND WOMAN: The mountaintop! I must go to the mountaintop!
She jumps up and rushes out.
3RD MAN: You're right, Preacher! I will do as you say. I will sell my house and join you on the mountaintop!
He jumps up and rushes out. Only the PREACHER and the 3RD WOMAN are left.
PREACHER: (In a normal tone of voice) What about you? Why are you still here?
3RD WOMAN: Oh, is the service over? Then I suppose I should be getting home.
PREACHER: Haven't you been listening? Don't you realize you should be going with the others to the mountaintop?
3RD WOMAN: I heard what you said, and I was very moved, but I think I'll stay home all the same.
PREACHER: Don't you believe in the second coming?
3RD WOMAN: I do.
PREACHER: Aren't you awed and inspired by what the scriptures say?
3RD WOMAN: Of course.
PREACHER: (Annoyed) Then why aren't you panicking?
3RD WOMAN: Oh, do the scriptures say we should panic? Or that we will panic?
PREACHER: We should panic. That's how I read them.
3RD WOMAN: I see. Well, I hope you don't mind too much if I don't. I believe I can stand up quite nicely for the Son of Man at home.
PREACHER: But that's not right. The scripture says ...
3RD WOMAN: (Interrupting) What about you? How are you planning to wait for Jesus' return?
PREACHER: Wait? There's no time to wait! I have things to do, people to see. There are many who don't yet know about the mountaintop. Someone has to tell them. And that someone should be me.
He jumps up and rushes out.
3RD WOMAN: Well, I guess he's decided to panic. I was going to tell him that Jesus will be able to find us at home as well as on the mountaintop, but he didn't give me a chance. At least I think that's true. I'd hate to be wrong. (To audience) What do you think? Should I go home or to the mountaintop? What would you do?
She gets up from her stool and leaves.
