Aids To The Psalms
I will bless the Lord at all times;
his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul makes it boast in the Lord;
let the humble hear and be glad.
O magnify the Lord with me,
and let us exalt his name together.
I sought the Lord, and he answered me,
and delivered me from all my fears.
Look to him, and be radiant;
so your faces shall never be ashamed.
This poor soul cried, and was heard by the Lord,
and was saved from every trouble.
The angel of the Lord encamps
around those who fear him,
and delivers them.
O taste and see that the Lord is good;
happy are those who take refuge in him.

The Singer boasts. He says, "My God is the best God you ever did see! My God is the bestest God in the entire county, the entire world, the entire cosmos! Hey you guys, come hear just how stupendous my God is! Let's all cheer for my God!" A second Singer says, "I was down and out and hollered for the Lord to help me, and God did. God rescued me from my dilemma and now only that, God gave me such confidence, such faith, that now I feel fearless. I'm just an ordinary person and God helped me; so friends, God wants to help you as well." The two Singers join their voices in praise at a communion service. Together they sing, "The Lord tastes good!"
Reflection
How we love to boast. We heap praises upon our own accomplishments with great enthusiasm. We love to subtly or unsubtly tell others what wonderful workers, spouses, children, church members, and what all-around good human beings we are. We may "aw shucks" it when someone compliments us but we really think it is our just due. And when we quit bragging about our personal accomplishments we move on to family, community, school, state and country. "My dad is bigger, stronger, smarter and more handsome than your dad. My school has better athletes and scholars than your school. My state has greener grass, bluer water and fresher air than your state. My country is the best country in the entire world." But bragging is a bore, with one exception. It's okay to brag about God. In fact, it is good to boast about God because boasting about God shifts our selfish focus to our greatest reality. Boasting about God is a real boast because God is good. Psalmists, Singers are religious boasters. Sing, boast about God today.
