Lectionary Worship Workbook
Series III, Cycle A
Object:
Litany: A Conversation With The Psalmist
L: The abyss, the unknown, the feared:
C: Out of the depths have I called to you, O Lord;
Lord, hear my voice;
let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication.
L: Shouting, running, searing pain:
C: If you, Lord, were to note what is done amiss,
O Lord, who could stand?
L: Sinking down, deeper, losing oneself,
C: for there is forgiveness with you;
therefore you shall be feared.
L: Will it come? Will it be over? When? When?
C: I wait for the Lord;
my soul waits for him;
in his word is my hope.
L: In the stillness, in the silence, when there is nothing left,
C: my soul waits for the Lord,
more than watchmen for the morning,
more than watchmen for the morning.
L: It is a promise ... unbroken ... listen --
C: O Israel, wait for the Lord,
for with the Lord there is mercy.
L: It is hope beyond all hoping.
C: With God there is plenteous redemption,
and we shall be redeemed from all our sins.
Prayer Of The Day
P: You, who defeated the tempter and made the blind to see; you, who fills us from the wellsprings of your love and brings the dead to life; you, O holy one, who gives your life for the world, break open all of our tombs and speak to us, that we may live. In the name of Christ.
C: Amen.
Offertory Prayer
A: Poverty or affluence, age or youth,
C: we have known the dry valley. As we lift these gifts before you we lift our parched and aching hearts, that in this meal you would speak our name, and we would live anew. Amen.
Sending
P: Lazarus, come out, he says.
Lazarus, _______, ______, _____, _____, (fill in the names)
come out and live -- that you may be my witnesses.
May this word carry you through this Holy Week,
that even in the darkest hour you would look to him and live.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, + and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.

Service Notes
Do not feel restrained by the Psalm translation chosen for the Litany (LBW/BCP). If KJV or RSV, and so on, is the language of prayer that allows your people their clearest access to the divine, simply substitute that translation for the congregational voice in the litany.
Let today's gospel reading be read by one voice. Have the pastor, alone, process to the center of the congregation, and let the power and starkness of the word do its work. No drama or dance can approximate the raising of Lazarus: all are diminutions limited by our imaginations.
The Eucharistic Prayer today can be prayed in song. The hymn "I Am The Bread Of Life" may be sung by the presider, with the congregation joining on the refrain. An alternate spoken option on this day would be the prayer of Hippolytus.
