Purpose: To remind children that the good life requires the presence of God; and with God, we will love one another.
Material: You will need several pieces of large paper or poster board. On one, make a large circle. On the front of another, print the word ''GOD.'' On the back, print ''GOOD.'' You will also need a poster with the letter ''I'' on it. And on another, print ''LIVE'' on one side and ''LOVE'' on the other side. You will also need enough donut holes to share.
Lesson: Today I would like you to do a few things with the figure ''O.'' (The letter ''O'' can be formed with your fingers.) This shape can represent several things. Can you tell me what they are? ... (The letter O and zero. It is also called a circle.) Now, let's see what happens to the word GOOD (Show that side of poster.) if you take ''GOD'' out of it. (Turn the poster over.) What is left? ... (Zero; or nothing.) Without God we cannot know what is good. Without God, we have nothing. (Show the poster that has the circle on it.)
Now, let's call our figure a circle. When we have a circle, it surrounds everything that is inside the circle. (You may let the children form a circle around you.) The circle reminds us that we need to include other people in our lives. When we like someone, sometimes we put our arms around him or her.
We need to reach out to people and let them be a part of our lives.
Again, we have two words that help us to remember this. First, what does this letter (''I'') stand for? It represents a person whom we call ''I.'' That person can live (Show L-I-V-E on the poster board.), but to have the full life God wants us to have, we need to let others live with us. We need that circle we just talked about. Let's see what happens if we replace the ''I'' with the circle ''O.'' What do we have now? (LOVE) Jesus said, we are to love one another to show that we are his followers (Cf. John 13:34).
The donut is shaped like an ''O,'' but we have been thinking about what is included in the ''O,'' so instead of a donut, I have a donut hole for each one of you.
Possible Times To Use This Illustration In The Home:
• When your child has excluded a friend from his or her play time.
• When a child does not want to take part in a group activity.
• When you have shared a donut or donut hole with your child.
Scriptural Background: ''I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing'' (John 15:5).
