The Sermon:
This is the time of the year that wildflowers start to bloom. Some are very beautiful. They can be all kinds of colors like yellow, blue, purple, white, and pink. But, you have to be outdoors to see them. This makes us think of Jesus. Jesus spent a lot of time outdoors. That is where crowds of people came to hear him teach. While he taught, many times he used things of the outdoors to help people understand what he meant. One day he talked about wildflowers. Do you know what wildflowers are? They are flowers that come up and bloom all by themselves. Nobody plants them, they just grow. If you drive in the country, many times you can see them along the road. Here is what Jesus said about some wildflowers called lilies in Luke 12:27-28, "Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you...."
Jesus said those flowers don't work and make their clothes, yet they are even more beautiful than the clothes that King Solomon wore. He was trying to teach his disciples and us, too, that we worry and spend too much time thinking about getting clothes and other stuff and not enough time thinking about pleasing God. If God cares for the wildflowers and clothes the wildflowers in such a beautiful way, then he will certainly take care of us. In verse 31, Jesus says, "Instead, strive for his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well."
To strive for the kingdom means try hard to do the things Jesus asks of us and not do the things we shouldn't. This should be the most important thing in our life. And then, Jesus promises that we will have what we need.
He doesn't mean that people can be lazy and not work, but God will take care of us if Jesus is our Savior and pleasing him comes first in our life.
