Listening To God
Drama
SUNDAY MORNING READERS' THEATER
Cast: Two people of either gender, PAT and LEE, VOICEOVER
Length:
7 minutes
PAT and LEE are seated together on their stools.
PAT: Lee? Remember what we were talking about last night?
LEE: Yes. We were talking about the will of God.
PAT: It was a fascinating discussion, but I'm not sure I got it all the first time through.
LEE: No?
PAT: I wish you would explain that concept to me again. You know, the one about doing God's will.
LEE: Well, Pat, it's not that hard. God has a plan for each of us. A plan for our life. If we were all to follow that plan, the world would be a much better place.
PAT: Because God's plan is perfect.
LEE: Exactly. Our job is to discover that plan and follow it.
VOICEOVER: (Calmly and quietly) Lee, this is your Creator speaking.
PAT: But how do we know? How do we know what that plan is?
LEE: By following God's word. As Jesus said, "If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples." We must read the scriptures well, know them backwards and forwards. It's all in the scriptures.
VOICEOVER: Lee, I want to have a word with you.
PAT: Yes, I can see that. But I thought the scriptures were general advice. How do you know what God wants of us - specifically? Individually?
LEE: I admit, that's a little harder. But again, if we turn to the scriptures we will see that there are different gifts for different people. Each of us is special in God's sight. And each one has a special task to perform.
PAT: And that is what will please God?
VOICEOVER: Lee, there's something I want you to do for me.
LEE: That's right, Pat. There are some tests you can take to determine your own particular spiritual gift. Once you know that, the rest is easy.
PAT: Is it?
LEE: Absolutely! As Jesus said, "You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free."
PAT: I thought he was talking about knowing that he was the Christ.
LEE: That's part of it. But also knowing where he intends each of us to fit into God's greater plan. As Jesus said, "As for you, you should do what you have heard from the Father."
PAT: Forgive me if I'm being a little dense, Lee, but I still don't see how exactly I fit in.
VOICEOVER: Lee, listen to me. I need to speak with you.
LEE: Well, let's see if we can't make this a bit clearer. What is your spiritual gift?
PAT: I have no idea.
LEE: Well, there's teaching, preaching, deeds of power ...
PAT: I wouldn't think it's one of those.
LEE: Well, then what about healing, hospitality, leadership, speaking in tongues?
PAT: No. Not one of those, either.
LEE: (Impatiently) Well, what then? Decide! You can't leave it all up to me.
VOICEOVER: Lee, listen. There's something I want you to tell Pat. It's important.
PAT: (Reluctantly) Well, teaching, if anything. I've done a little of that.
LEE: (Relieved) Okay, then! That's it!
PAT: And how can I use it to fit into God's plan?
LEE: That's an easy one. You should be teaching Sunday school. And I know of an opening. I'll introduce you to the supervisor next Sunday.
PAT: (Dubiously) That's fine. I guess.
LEE: Good! I'm glad that's settled.
PAT: By the way, Lee. What's your gift?
LEE: I'm glad you asked that. I took one of those tests I was telling you about and it said that I definitely have the gift of discernment of spirits.
PAT: Really! What does that mean?
LEE: It means that I can always tell when the spiritual world is trying to make contact.
VOICEOVER: (A little more impatiently) Lee! I want you to help me.
PAT: That sounds important. And dangerous.
LEE: Oh, it is! Satan and his evil cohorts are always near us, interfering with God's rule over the world. It's important that we know exactly where they are at all times so that we can avoid them.
PAT: You know, I've had the feeling in the last few minutes that something is trying to contact you.
LEE: Nah! I would have heard it if it were. I'm always on the lookout for things like that.
PAT: Well, if you say so. But what do you do when you hear...?
VOICEOVER: Pat, I need to talk to you.
PAT: (Looking all around) Huh? What was that?
LEE: Well, Pat. It's a very useful gift. One the church body has great need of. You see ...
PAT is looking all around.
LEE: Pat! Are you listening?
VOICEOVER: Pat, I need to tell you something.
PAT: (To LEE) Just a minute. (To VOICEOVER) What? What is it?
LEE: (Irritably) What is what? What are you doing, Pat?
VOICEOVER: Pat.
PAT: Yes?
VOICEOVER: I want you to do something for me.
PAT: Anything.
LEE: What are you talking about? You can't do just anything. You have a specific role in God's plan. We all do.
VOICEOVER: I want you to stop listening to Lee. S/he doesn't know what s/he's talking about.
PAT: Okay.
LEE: Okay what? I haven't said anything.
VOICEOVER: Your gift is the gift of wisdom. You will know truth from falsehood. And you can convey that knowledge to others.
PAT: To Lee?
LEE: To Lee, what? Who are you talking to?
VOICEOVER: To those who will listen.
PAT: Oh. Right. But how will I know ...?
VOICEOVER: I'll let you know. Just keep listening.
PAT: Okay.
VOICEOVER: As for Lee, I think you better not associate with him/her too much for a while.
PAT: Right.
PAT gets down from the stool and walks away without a backward glance.
LEE: Wait! Wait, Pat! Where are you going?
LEE slips down from the stool and goes after PAT.
LEE: You can't just walk away like that. Stop! I have more things to tell you. Don't you want to know what to do next?
LEE exits, still talking.
