Object: a burglar's disguise and a sack for "loot"
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought with me something today that is very frightening, but I hope will not be afraid. We must remember that we are only pretending, but this is something that happens and we must know about it. How many of you have seen a robber or burglar? (let them answer) We see them on television but we don't see them many other places.
I brought along some of the things that a robber wears and I am going to put them on. (take out a mask or a stocking and pull it over your face; then take a cap and put it over the stocking; hold up the sack in which to put your loot) Many times, burglars try to hide their faces and hands. They also do most of their robbing at night in the dark.
Do you know why they do it like this and at that time? (let them answer) That's right, so that no one will know who they are and so that no one will see them. They are not very proud of what they do, are they? They are ashamed of themselves. People who do evil are not only afraid of being caught, they are ashamed of themselves. They don't like themselves and they will hide even when they are alone. When people do evil things, they like darkness.
Jesus is called the Light of the World. Jesus is light because he is good and he does good. He can even forgive the evil because he is good. When you do something wrong and you are ashamed of it, you feel like hiding. If you tell Jesus about it and ask him to forgive you and promise that you won't do it again, then Jesus will forgive you. When Jesus forgives us it is like having a bright light come to you. You feel clean and wonderful and you can stop being ashamed.
I know little boys and girls who have told a big lie. They are afraid that their mother or father will find it out. They try to hide. They don't want to talk. They have their feelings hurt easily. They are in bad moods. Then they think about Jesus and how he doesn't like lies, and they are ashamed. When that happens, they ask Jesus to forgive them and promise him that they won't lie about such a thing again. Pretty soon they feel better and they can tell their mom and dad what they did and how badly they feel that they lied. Now their mom and dad can forgive them also. Everyone is happy. They don't feel like hiding in the dark. They want to live and be happy in the light of Jesus.
You remember that Jesus is the light. Evil wants to hide from light. When you feel like hiding you know that you have done wrong just like the robber. But when you live in the light, then you are living with Jesus and that is the best feeling in the world.
