The LORD Is King
Devotional
Companion to the Psalter
A Devotional Guide to the Psalms
The LORD is king, he is robed in majesty ...
your throne is established from of old,
you are from everlasting ...
More majestic than the thunders of mighty waters,
more majestic than the waves of the sea,
majestic on high is the LORD.
-- Psalm 93:1a, 2, 4
Theme: The majesty of Yahweh
Outline
1-2 -- Yahweh's eternal sovereignty is seen in the laws of the physical world.
3-4 -- The hostile powers of earth (like "floods"), however majestic or loud-sounding, threaten his rule in vain.
5 -- As established as the earth, so is your law and the holiness of your dwelling.
Notes
• Kingship of God/Enthronement
• An enthronement psalm (with 47; 96; 97; 98; 99) celebrating the kingship of Yahweh, the LORD.
• Floods of the Nile, the Euphrates, or "the Great Sea" were symbolic of the imperial powers threatening to overrun the world, as well as the power of evil generally.
• Decrees (edah) stand for the Torah (which includes such matters as creation, election, covenant, redemption, and the Commandments).
For Reflection
• Recall times when Israel experienced chaos, and through it all God continued to further his purpose, preserving Israel.
• Most of all, think of our king enthroned upon a cross, robed with a holy compassion, a glory revealing God's love, and of his rising the third day, showing God's majesty to be mightier than all the powers of evil.
Prayer
Lord God, how good it is for us to remember that your power and majesty are unchanging. When all the powers of evil opposed you, you triumphed over them by the gift of your Son, our redeemer. We see your glory in his resurrection and in your promise that nothing in life or death shall separate us from your enduring love in him -- Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.
