The LORD Is King! Let The Earth Rejoice
Devotional
Companion to the Psalter
A Devotional Guide to the Psalms
Object:
The LORD is king! Let the earth rejoice;
let the many coastlands be glad ...
The heavens proclaim his righteousness;
and all the peoples behold his glory.
Light dawns for the righteous,
and joy for the upright in heart.
-- Psalm 97:1, 6, 11
Theme: The glory of God's reign
Outline
1-3 -- Rejoice, for Yahweh is king, powerful and righteous.
4-6 -- His manifestations to Israel (causing Nature to tremble) are known to all.
7-9 -- Idolators are shamed, but Israel rejoices at his exaltation.
10-12 -- Let Israel give thanks and obey.
Notes
• The Kingship of God/Enthronement
• "Coastlands" is a term for nations around the Mediterranean (v. 1). These people have cause to rejoice also at God's victory over his foes.
• "Your judgments" your ruling and overruling in history (and at history's end) (v. 8). Also the beautiful results of God's wonderful governing (in contrast to rebellious man's pathetic disorder).
• An eschatological hymn looking forward to a fulfillment to come.
For Reflection
• General characteristics the Lord loves in people: they hate evil because God does, they are faithful, they are righteous, and they are upright in heart. This is the kind of people God will make of us sinners, not a self-improvement piety. ("For we are his workmanship" -- Ephesians 2:10.)
• Are we receptive to becoming this kind of person?
Prayer
We tremble along with nature at your awesome power and rejoice in your victorious overthrow of all evil. Forgive us our every failure to trust and obey, and cleanse and purify us for the glorious now-dawning light of your kingdom, where with your Son and the Holy Spirit you live and reign, now and forever. Amen.
