Call To Worship
Leader: Serve the Lord with a right spirit.
People: What is the right spirit in serving God?
Leader: A spirit of loving service to others, which seeks not self-glory, but benefit for those you serve.
People: We will give of ourselves in service to God and to his people.
Collect
Almighty God, our Maker, Creator of rich and poor alike, through our worship may we be inspired to renew our commitment to serve you by serving others. Open our eyes to the needs of those who are hungry that we may diligently seek to show our compassion by our deeds. In Jesus' name. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, when did we see you hungry and not feed you, thirsty and not give you a drink? We know the answer all too well, Lord, and we beg your forgiveness. By the power of your Holy Spirit, Lord, enable us to seek out those in need and minister to them in your name. Amen.
Hymns
"For The Beauty Of The Earth"
"This Is My Father's World"
Proper 18/Ordinary Time 23
Sunday between September 4 and September 10 inclusive
Second Lesson: James 2:1-10 (11-13), 14-17
Theme: Actions Prove Our Faith
Call To Worship
Leader: If we would find God in our lives, if our worship is to be fulfilling, we must seek God's will for us.
People: Speak to us, Lord, as we open our ears and our hearts to your presence in our lives.
Leader: The Lord is present to those who seek him in a spirit of love and humility.
People: We place our lives in your hands, O Lord. Lead us and we will follow.
Collect
Lord, we your children are gathered in your house to give you thanks and praise. We come from many different walks of life, but with the knowledge that we are all equal in your sight, and that you show no favorites. In that spirit we come, too, to renew our vow to love you with heart, mind, soul, and strength, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. In the name of Christ we pray. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
O God, despite our best intentions we find ourselves discriminating against some of our neighbors for a variety of reasons. When our actions or lack of actions belie our faith, we need your forgiveness. Send your Holy Spirit upon us that we may truly serve you by doing all that we possibly can to meet the needs of our neighbors. For Christ's sake. Amen.
Hymns
"O Church Of God United"
"Here, O Lord, Your Servants Gather"
Proper 18/Ordinary Time 23
Sunday between September 4 and September 10 inclusive
Gospel Lesson: Mark 7:24-37
Theme: The Power Of Faith Is Not Limited
Call To Worship
As we worship let us draw near to Jesus who has the power to make us whole. Let us keep our eyes on Jesus on whom our faith depends from beginning to end.
Collect
Divine Physician, we would draw near to you in this time of worship, for we know that you can make us whole. We thank you for your sensitivity to and awareness of the needs of others. You care for people, the hungry and the oppressed. You restore sight and help the stooped to stand tall. You give new heart to the bereaved and hopeless. Our faith is in you and we know you will not disappoint us. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
O Gracious God, you created us for fellowship with you and so that we might serve you by making rough places plain, making this a better world for your children. We have often failed in this task, even after you sent Christ to free us from the sins which bound us fast. We still prefer the snug harbor of our sins to the open seas of life where problems often seem overwhelming. Forgive us for our fears, Lord, and grant us the courage that cares enough to give of our very best in service to you and to our world. Amen.
Hymns
"Faith Of Our Fathers"
"O Master, Let Me Walk With Thee"
