The Lost Sheep
Children's sermon
Children's Sermons A To Z
Exegetical Aim: God's love and concern for one lost child.
Props: A child who is able to play along with hiding until she is found. It should be a child who is known by most of the other children. Just before the children's sermon the child hiding should take her place. You want the children to create as much commotion in the sanctuary as possible, so arrange for her to find a good hiding place. Gather the children as usual.
Lesson: Good morning! (response) It's good to have everybody here this morning ... Wait a minute ... Is everybody here? (response) Somebody is missing. (response) Who is missing? (response) If they don't know, describe the child. You know what we have to do when someone is lost? (response) That's right. We need to find [child's name] and bring her back. Get up and motion for the children to get up as you say: Let's go find [Child's name].
Good job! You found her. Boy, [Child's name]! We thought we would never find you. Have any of you ever been lost? (response) What happened? (response) Who found you? (response) It's scary when you get lost, isn't it? (response)
Application: This reminds me of a story Jesus told. He said there was this shepherd who had a hundred sheep and he lost one of them. Do you know what the shepherd did? (response) That's right. He left all his sheep and went after the lost one, and he didn't stop until he had found that lost sheep. Jesus was talking about you and me. Whenever we are lost, God will come after us and he will keep searching until he finds us.
Let's Pray: Lord, you are our shepherd, and you come looking for us when we are lost. Amen.

Proper 19
1 Timothy 1:12--17
Saving Grace
Exegetical Aim: To show that Christ is our salvation.
Props: A life--preserver (vest), arm floats for a child, an inflatable ring, sunglasses, etc.
Lesson: Hey, kids, it's not going to be warm much longer, so I'm going to go swimming. I just thought I would bring some of my things to show you. Do you think these things will help me swim? Put on the gear and put the arm floats on for a laugh. Put on the sunglasses as a finishing touch.
For what do we use these things? (response) One of these things can even save our lives. Which one of these is the most important? (they point to the life preserver) What do you call this? (response) It is called a life preserver. Whenever we are in a boat or canoe, we should always wear one of these. If my boat turned over and I fell in the water, what would happen to me? (response)
Application: You know, that reminds me of a scripture in the Bible. It says that Jesus Christ came into the world to save us, to be a life preserver. A life preserver like the one I'm wearing has been specially made to help me stay above the water, but Jesus is a different kind of life saver. How does Jesus save us? (response) Jesus died on a cross to save us from sin and death. You see, we are all sinners (that means we all do bad things), and Jesus saves us from those bad things - he forgives us. Whenever you think you're getting into trouble, you can pray and trust that Jesus will be there with you to save you. He will do that because he really cares for you. Here is the verse from the Bible, and I want you to say it with me: Christ (Christ) came into the world (came into the world) to save sinners (to save sinners).
Let's Pray: Dear God, thank you for sending Jesus Christ to save us and to care for us. For we pray in his name. Amen.
