Story Time At The Altar

When it was summer, the boy wanted winter, and in the winter, he dreamed of summer. In school he could hardly wait until he got home, and on Sundays, he longed for school to begin. He especially wanted to be older, but to be older requires time. So it was that in the woods where he would go walking, he met an old woman who knew of his dream and gave him a ball of a magic thread. All he needed to do was to pull the string and time would pass quickly. Soon he was pulling the string whenever he was unhappy or there was suffering or misfortune. With time the string turned from gold to silver to gray, as his hair turned from brown to gray to white. An old man now, walking in the woods, he met the woman who had given him the ball. Seeing how unhappy he still was, she gave him one wish, and he wished to live his life again without the ball. When he awoke he saw what a beautiful morning it was and enjoyed it all day.
Talk together: Have you ever wished as the boy did? Sometimes we are impatient. "If I could only read, then I would be happy." "If I were older, I could stay up later." "When I am bigger, they will let me play with them." We go on wishing and wishing when today is the day to enjoy.
Prayer: Dear God, help us be content with "what is." We thank you for the beauty of this day. Amen.
