May God Be Gracious To Us
Devotional
Companion to the Psalter
A Devotional Guide to the Psalms
Object:
May God be gracious to us and bless us
and make his face to shine upon us,
that your way may be known upon earth,
your saving power among all nations.
Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you.
-- Psalm 67:1-3
Theme: A great prayer for missions
Outline
1-2 -- God bless us so that all the world may come to know the Savior God.
3-4 -- May all nations come to praise the God of Israel.
5-7 -- Let all peoples praise God and revere him for the gift of the harvest.
Notes
• Thanksgiving
• A joyful psalm, evangelical in spirit, wanting all people to know the saving power of God.
• Verse echoes the Aaronic benediction (Numbers 6:24 ff).
For Reflection
• This is Israel at its best. Think of how joy and concern for the world's redemption seem to go hand-in-hand. Do we seek God's blessing for this purpose? Or just for ourselves? If Christians have a defeated attitude, could this be part of the problem? The church and the individual Christian need to pray this psalm.
• It would be a good alternative to the Nunc Dimittis to use often!
Prayer
O God, you shine your holiness, love, and glory upon us in Jesus, your Son, in his life, his death, and his resurrection. May this revelation of you bless and make us more effective in our calling to make known your redeeming way to all peoples everywhere. Amen.
