Pastor: (To the congregation) Do you hear something? It sounds like somebody is singing. (Pauses with his hand to his ear) There it is again!
Peter: (Singing to the tune of "How Great Thou Art") How great I am, how great I am. Then sings my soul, I am so wonderful ...
Pastor: Peter, what are you doing, anyway?
Peter: I was just singing.
Pastor: Well, you had the words all wrong. That's supposed to be a song of praise to God. The words should be, "How Great Thou Art."
Peter: I know I shouldn't change the words like that. I was just really excited.
Pastor: Oh, really? About what?
Peter: Our Sunday school teacher has been wanting us to memorize Bible verses! I didn't want to. I have to memorize spelling words at school, and I don't like that. But I decided to try it the other day.
Pastor: Oh? And how did it go?
Peter: Great! I found out that I'm good at it. I'm better than good. I'm fantastic! I'll bet I'm the best memorizer in the whole world.
Pastor: Well, Peter, you see ...
Peter: (Interrupts) Did you know that John 3:16 says: "For God so loved the world ..."
Pastor: (Interrupts) Hold it! ... Have you memorized Colossians 3:23 yet?
Peter: No. What does it say?
Pastor: It says: "And whatsoever you do, do it heartily as to the Lord, and not unto men." That means we should do everything for the Lord, and not to impress others. Do you see the connection?
Peter: Yes. I guess I'd better not memorize verses anymore.
Pastor: I wouldn't say that. Memorizing scripture is good for us, but we need to do it so that we can bring more glory to God.
Peter: I see now. I'd better work on that verse you just quoted. What was it again?
Pastor: Colossians 3:23. Let's go look it up together.
