Did you ever see the motion picture The Miracle Worker? A new version of it has been released. In the version years ago, Patty Duke played the part of the child Helen Keller, the world's most noted deaf mute.
All through the story, Miss Sullivan, the teacher, tried to communicate with Helen, who up to then had become a very stubborn and spoiled child. It was not until the dramatic scene of the two at the old-fashioned iron pump that any contact was made.
Miss Sullivan was pumping water in the hands of Helen, and then writing the word in the child's palm.
Suddenly, Helen began to say that word she had used when she was a baby, before her illness: WA WA, meaning water. It became what theologians call an "existential moment": a moment of reality, a great breakthrough.
It can be such a moment of reality for one seeking to know God, when one realizes that God is seeking us! He offers us forgiveness of our sins, a new life in Jesus Christ. The miracle of saving grace sets us free.
