"It's burning!" Moses exclaimed, looking at the bush burning before him. "Who started the fire?" Moses was talking to himself because there was no one else there. But suddenly Moses heard, "Moses!" Moses shook his head. Being alone in the wilderness so long must have affected his hearing, for bushes do not speak.
Nor do bushes burn unless someone starts a fire. Moses was confused. Moses was worried. Moses was afraid.
"Moses, take off your shoes," the voice said. "You are standing on holy ground." Moses wondered how this land was holy because here they worshiped Pharaoh the king instead of God.
The voice said, "I have heard my people's prayers. I am sending you to the king to let my people go."
Now Moses was really afraid. The king was powerful. He could kill Moses. Moses protested, "But the king will not listen to me. He will kill me."
The voice said, "I will be with you. I, the Lord, your God!"
Now Moses was really, really afraid and hid his face. He was afraid to look at God and he took off his shoes, for he knew he was in the presence of God.
Talk together: Why was Moses afraid? What makes you afraid? All of us have fears, and God said to Moses, "I will be with you."
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for being with us to give us courage and guidance, comfort, and love. Help us hear your voice and remember that wherever you are is holy ground. Amen.
