TREE
Production Notes: We used a special tree that was sound activated and placed it in front of an amplifier. When the "tree" spoke it also moved. This might not always be possible.
MR. ROBERTS: (MUSIC UP AS MR. ROBERTS ENTERS AND CHANGES INTO HIS TV COSTUME) Oh, come on in. Sit down. We can have a little talk with each other.
Since the last time we met I thought about you a lot. Uh-huh. I did. I was cooking something for myself the other evening and I thought, my goodness, I'd like to share this with my friend. Uh-huh. And now you're here and we can share something together. Would you like that? Well, so would I. Let's check out what the picture says. Well, what's this? It says "XMAS." Do you all see that? "XMAS." X-M-A-S. What does it mean? It means Christmas, doesn't it. That's right. We'll talk more about Christmas later. (DOOR BELL RINGS)
Oh, oh, someone's coming to call. Who do you think it is? I was expecting Mr. McDoley but it is a bit early for his delivery. What do you think? I better go see who it is. (LOOKING OUT WINDOW) It is. It is Mr. McDoley. I better let him in.
MR. McDOLEY: Good day. Good day, Mr. Roberts. Good day. A busy day today. It's Christmas Eve, today, you know, Mr. Roberts.
MR. ROBERTS: Yes, I know. We were just going to talk about Christmas, Mr. McDoley
MR. McDOLEY: You were? Oh, that's nice, Mr. Roberts. That's really nice.
MR. ROBERTS: Would you like to stay and talk with us about Christmas, Mr. McDoley?
MR. McDOLEY: Why, I'd love to, Mr. Roberts, but I've got more deliveries than ever today. I mustn't be late, you know. Good-bye, and Merry Christmas to you.
MR. ROBERTS: Mr. McDoley, aren't you forgetting your delivery?
MR. MCDOLEY: Oh, my goodness. I almost forgot, didn't I? I do have a delivery for you, Mr. Roberts.
MR. ROBERTS: Is it what I ordered?
MR. McDOLEY: I think it is, Mr. Roberts. I think it is. I have it right here. (HE PRODUCES A BOX)
MR. ROBERTS: Good. This is right on time, Mr. McDoley. I was just going to talk about Christmas.
MR. McDOLEY: Here you are, Mr. Roberts. I have one Christmas tree.
MR. ROBERTS: That's right. That's what I ordered, one Christmas tree.
MR. McDOLEY: All righty. I've got to go.
MR. ROBERTS: Mr. McDoley. How much is this delivery?
MR. McDOLEY: That's just "one," today, Mr. Roberts. All righty?
MR. ROBERTS: All right, here you are, Mr. McDoley. Here is "one."
MR. McDOLEY: "One." Thank you, Mr. Roberts. I'll be running along, now. A very special busy day, today.
MR. ROBERTS: Wait, a minute, Mr. McDoley. I wanted you to have a Christmas cookie that I baked just the other evening.
MR. McDOLEY: All righty, Mr. Roberts. I will take just one. And Merry Christmas to you Mr. Roberts. (EXITS)
MR. ROBERTS: And a Merry Christmas to you, too, Mr. McDoley. Isn't Mr. McDoley a nice man. He's busy, of course, but he always takes time to say, "Hi." I like that.
Wasn't Mr. McDoley nice to give me some decorations for my Christmas tree? Now, let's decorate the tree. Would you like that? I've been looking forward to it all week long. Now, what's the first thing I should put on the tree? I know. I'll hang this garland.
CHRISTMAS TREE: Thank you.
MR. ROBERTS: Well, my, my, this is interesting. A talking Christmas tree. I wasn't expecting that, were you?
CHRISTMAS TREE: That strand you just put on me felt good. It dressed me up so I can show forth light for Christmas.
MR. ROBERTS: Show forth light?
CHRISTMAS TREE: Sure. It's what I'm supposed to do. I shine for Jesus at Christmas time.
MR. ROBERTS: I didn't know that. Did you know that?
CHRISTMAS TREE: Well, it's true. Who created trees?
MR. ROBERTS: Well, God did.
CHRISTMAS TREE: Of course. God created trees and you, Mr. Roberts, and everyone. And we can choose to shine for Him.
MR. ROBERTS: That's right, we can choose to shine for Jesus. I want to shine for Jesus, don't you? What shall I put on next? I know, I'll add some of these ornaments. See how shiny they are?
CHRISTMAS TREE: They are lights in a dark world. Every time we do something that is good or tell the truth or obey our parents it is a light in a dark world.
MR. ROBERTS: Oh, I want to be a light shining in a dark world. I'll bet you do too. And look what we have now. An angel. I know what this is for. For the angels that sang "Hallelujah" when Jesus was born.
CHRISTMAS TREE: Right you are, Mr. Roberts. The Bible says there was a whole army of angels telling the world that Jesus was born.
MR. ROBERTS: I would liked to have seen that. Would you like to see angels and hear them singing?
CHRISTMAS TREE: Do you know what, Mr. Roberts? We all can be just like those angels and tell everyone about Jesus being born.
MR. ROBERTS: Yes, yes, we can all do that. Let's not forget the star. It goes on top.
CHRISTMAS TREE: The star of Bethlehem, pointing the way to Jesus.
MR. ROBERTS: Now, look. I'm going to point to Jesus, just like the star of Bethlehem did. (HE POINTS TO HIS HEART) You see? Let's all point to our heart. Jesus is in our heart if we ask Him to live there. Jesus in our heart. Uh-huh. Isn't that wonderful? It sure is. Do you know what?
I'd like to sing a Christmas carol right now. Would you like that? Let's all sing "Silent Night" and the Christmas Tree will lead us. (ALL SING) That was just wonderful. And now, I want to show you the picture. Remember what is says? That's right. It says "XMAS." Do you know why the X is there? It stands for Christ. X in Greek is chi. In the Greek language it is the first letter in the title, Christ. So when you see "XMAS" you must always think of Jesus Christ. Can you remember that? I bet you can.
Do you know it's time for me to go again. But I'll be back. Yes, I will. I'll be back to be with you, my friend. But until I come back our friend Jesus will always be with you. I hope you and I are friends. And I'll see you tomorrow.
