Call To Worship
So great was the change to come in the lives of Abram and Sarai that they became as new people. God gave them different names. To the casual ear, "Abraham" is not so unlike "Abram" and "Sarai" is similar to "Sarah," yet they knew their lives were changed forever. As we worship today, let us reflect upon the signs of God's activity in our lives.
Collect
We would be listening, O God, for your voice. Help us quiet unimportant ambitions that reach out no further than ourselves so that we might allow the ideas of your eternal Spirit to speak. We want to be as true as we can to your hopes for us. In the name of Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Like pondering the choice of a unique e-mail identity, we consider the best expression of our being, O God. Our names hold a lifetime of stories, yet you continue to surprise us with plans that bring us renewal. Grant us a keenness of spirit so that we might be aware of the significance of the smallest change of a name. Amen.
21B Hymns
"The God Of Abraham Praise" Tune: LEONI or YIGDAL
"I Would Be True" Tune: PEEK
"Let Us Hope When Hope Seems Hopeless" Tune: LET US HOPE
Second Sunday In Lent
Second Lesson: Romans 4:13-25
Theme: Promises, Promises
Call To Worship
Promises, promises -- empty words? Promises, the fullest of words. It will happen, says the promise God makes. Come, believe the promises of a faithful God.
Collect
God, you grace-filled artist, you find the smallest piece of life within us and raise it up. You grow hope into reality where we see only mirage. You call into existence the things that do not exist. O Thou, who keeps your promises. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Stretch our faith, O God, so we will expect to keep the promises we make. Expand our trust in you, so we will come through the unfruitful, Lenten times in our lives to give birth to an alleluia. Amen.
21B Hymns
"Guide Me, O [My Great Redeemer][Thou Great Jehovah]" Tune: CWM RHONDDA or ZION
"O Jesus, I Have Promised" or "O Savior, Precious Savior" Tune: ANGEL'S STORY
"God Of Abraham And Sarah" Tune: CONSTANTINE
Second Sunday In Lent
Gospel: Mark 8:31-38
Theme: Get Out Of The Way
Call To Worship
Leader: We must tell Satan to get out of the way so we can move forward.
People: Get behind me, Satan!
Leader: We must stand up to negative, destructive temptation. We must aim our energy toward that which heals and is constructive.
People: Get behind me, Satan!
Collect
We stand before your cross, O sacrificing God, aware that conflicting choices press upon us. As we begin to appreciate the brave choices Jesus made, let us renew the decision to be his followers. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
The changes you ask of us, O God, seem impossible. Like Peter, we do not even want to hear uncomfortable words. Forgive us when we are selfish. We consider denying ourselves but find too many things we do not want to give up. Forgive us for putting so much importance on human things. Help us to make room in our lives for the way of Christ. Amen.
21B Hymns
"Before Your Cross, O Jesus" Tune: ST. CHRISTOPHER
"Strengthen All The Weary Hands" Tune: SONG OF REJOICING
" 'Take Up Your Cross,' The Savior Said" Tune: DEUS TUORUM MILITUM or NUN LAST UNS DEN LEIB BEGRABEN or "Take Up Thy Cross" Tune: GERMANY
