Objects: some wine and some water in containers, to show the children
Good morning, boys and girls. I want to tell you a story this morning, and I hope it will help you to believe something wonderful about the person we know as Jesus.
Jesus was invited to a wedding in a town called Cana. The people to be married were either close friends of Jesus, or of his family, because we know that his mother was at the wedding, too. Jesus went to the wedding with his disciples and met his mother there. The disciples were fairly new, since Jesus had just begun his ministry a short time before. They had not been at the wedding very long when the people who were in charge ran out of refreshments. No doubt some of the people had been there a lot longer than Jesus and the disciples, so they did as people do today. They ate and drank almost everything that was given to them.
What do you do when you run out of refreshments at your parties? (let them answer) That's right; you get some more refreshments. The only problem was that the people at the wedding were drinking some very good wine and there was no place to get more. Mary knew that her son was someone very special, and that he could take care of almost any problem. She also knew that Jesus was not a magician. He did not trick people, or switch things so fast with his hands that people could not see what was happening. Jesus solved problems in only one way, and that was through his Father in heaven. Mary did not know what Jesus would do, but she was certain he could do something if it was wanted by God.
It takes a long time to make wine. There are good wines, and bad wines. Jesus told the people who were working at the party to take some very large jars and fill them with water. They did as they were told and then brought the jars back to the party. (show the children the water) When the people went over to the jars to fill their glasses, out came wine! (show the wine) No one knew what had happened, except Mary, the people working at the party, and the disciples of Jesus. But I want you to know that, from that time on, those people knew that Jesus was someone very special with a power that no one else had.
Do you think that you could change this water (hold up the water) to this wine? (hold up the wine) That's right; you could not. Maybe the next time you hear of someone running out of something to eat or drink, you will remember the day that Jesus took some clear water and turned it into the best wine that anyone had ever drunk.
