O Give Thanks To The LORD, Call On His Name
Devotional
Companion to the Psalter
A Devotional Guide to the Psalms
Object:
Make known his deeds among the peoples ...
Seek the LORD and his strength;
seek his presence continually.
Remember the wonderful works he has done,
his miracles, and the judgments he uttered ...
He is mindful of his covenant forever ...
So he brought his people out with joy ...
that they might keep his statutes
and observe his laws.
Praise the LORD!
-- Psalm 105:1, 4-5, 8a, 43a, 45
Theme: The wonder-filled early history of Israel
Outline
1-6 -- Proclaim and celebrate all that God has done.
7-11 -- He made a covenant with Abraham and never forgot it.
12-15 -- He protected a weak, wandering Israel.
16-22 -- He prepared ahead for them through Joseph.
23-25 -- He enabled them to multiply despite oppression.
26-36 -- He used Moses and Aaron for their release from Egypt.
37-45 -- He brought them into the promised land. Hallelujah!
Notes
• Praise -- History
• This psalm, a thanksgiving for the faithfulness of God to his covenant, is a companion to Psalm 106 (a confession of Israel's faithlessness and disobedience).
• This is one of three psalms reciting Israel's holy history (78; 105; 106).
For Reflection
• Israel's story is mainly about God's activity, his "wonderful works" and faithfulness to his covenant promise.
• Note the ways God protects, delivers, trains, and provides for his people, ways that could not have been foreseen or predicted by human wisdom.
• What does this suggest for our faith in him today, confronted as we are by great threats?
Prayer
Lord God, in fulfillment of your promise to Abraham, you sent your Son, Jesus Christ, to us, and by his death and resurrection broke the enslaving power of evil, of sin and of death, freeing us for the promised land of living with you here by faith and in resurrection glory to come. Protect, provide, and train us through our pilgrimage by your word and your Holy Spirit. Amen.
