O Sing To The LORD A New Song
Devotional
Companion to the Psalter
A Devotional Guide to the Psalms
Object:
O sing to the LORD a new song;
sing to the LORD all the earth.
Sing to the LORD, bless his name;
tell of his salvation from day to day.
Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous works among all the peoples ...
Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy
before the LORD ...
for he is coming to judge the earth.
-- Psalm 96:1-3, 12b-13a
Theme: Let the earth and all nations praise the LORD
Outline
1-3 -- Sing the praise of God and proclaim his glory among the nations.
4-6 -- The Lord alone is worthy of this, supreme above all.
7-9 -- All nations are called to come and behold his glory.
10-13 -- The Lord is king! All nature waits with anticipation of the joy of his righteous rule.
Notes
• Kingship of God/Enthronement
• A new song because of new beginnings for Israel, now back from exile, and the foretaste of new beginnings when God comes to govern all (v. 1). God as king and judge is welcomed, not feared!
• Enthronement psalms are eschatological, prophetic of the final goal when all nature participates in the joy of God's righteous rule. (See Romans 8:18-25.)
• "Holy splendor" -- a variety of meanings and applications (v. 9).
For Reflection
• This is truly a missionary psalm, yearning on behalf of the most urgent need of the world for all the nations to come to Yahweh.
• Lovers of nature can rejoice that God's reign brings a new day for the "sea and all that fills it," the field "and everything in it" (including the little animals), and the trees of the forest.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, son of Mary, son of God, when you came to dwell among us, we saw the glory of the Father, the beauty of his truth and righteousness. Your marvelous works wrought for us a great salvation. May your Holy Spirit use us all in sharing the good news to all peoples everywhere; that they and all nature may rejoice with us under your blessed rule and reign. Glory to you, O God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
