Ludwig van Beethoven was one of the truly great musicians of all time. His music appeals to us even today, long after it was written. Possibly his greatest composition was his "Ode To Joy" from his celebrated Ninth Symphony. We hear this music often in both secular and religious realms.
For example, "Ode To Joy" was used at the recent Olympic Games. It is often used at state occasions. It is so easy to enjoy and remember.
In the church hymnal we find it with the words, "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee." These choice words were added to the music by the well-known author of a century ago, Henry Van Dyke.
The striking thing about all this is that Beethoven never actually heard the music he had written. He was deaf! But the tune sang its way into his heart as it does ours. Of such is true greatness composed.
